He’s not going to become a champion, but I’m saying, who would do that? It makes no sense unless you’re setting up an excuse. He didn’t have to say that.”
Ryan dismissed comparisons between Benn’s cut and the restrictions he faced against Gervonta Davis in April 2023. Davis required him to remain below 146 pounds at the morning weigh-in after making the contracted 136-pound limit.
Unlike Garcia, Benn has no rehydration clause. Once he makes 147 pounds, he can replenish without his opponent controlling how much weight he regains.
In Garcia’s view, the inability to rehydrate properly caused his difficulties against Davis, not the initial reduction itself. Every fighter must make weight, he said, but Benn will have the opportunity he was denied to restore his body before entering the ring.
That lecture carries some irony. Garcia came in more than three pounds over the 140-pound limit against Devin Haney in 2024 and paid a financial penalty rather than forcing his body through the final stage. He now expects Benn to make welterweight without continually emphasizing the strain.
Such language may also create a mental trap. Describing 147 pounds as grueling can make the requirement feel like an opponent before Garcia throws a punch. If Benn encounters early difficulty, he already has a ready-made reason for why his body is failing him.
A severe reduction would also influence his tactics. Concerns about stamina and punch resistance may encourage Benn to force a quick finish. Charging Garcia early would increase his exposure to the left hook that remains Garcia’s most dangerous counter.
The discussion presents a separate problem for Garcia. Even a decisive victory may be discounted if Benn spends the promotion advertising how difficult it was to reach welterweight. Critics can claim Garcia defeated a depleted opponent rather than give him full credit for beating a legitimate challenger.
Benn accepted the title fight knowing its requirements. If making the limit proves too severe, Garcia will place responsibility on his decision rather than an unfair contractual restriction. Yet the excuse may already be established strongly enough to follow both fighters after the result.
