“Listening to the fight and watching it showed me that Andre Ward was intentionally looking for a negative thing to say, even in my good moments,” Ryan posted on X. “I didn’t like his approach to my fight nor his comments. They were biased and a bit unprofessional, hater-like.”

Ryan has an argument here. He dropped Benn twice and closed the show before Benn could mount any meaningful resistance. Benn never got the opportunity to land clean counter shots, nor did he drag Ryan into the sloppy exchanges that troubled him previously. When a fighter dominates so thoroughly, hunting for flaws in the middle of a highlight-reel knockout comes across as nitpicking.

Ward typically approaches commentary from an exacting, purist standpoint. He focuses on technical habits instead of offering automatic praise. The issue is that commentary guides the public’s impression, especially when an announcer repeatedly points out defensive vulnerabilities during a completely dominant round. To Ryan, that felt less like objective analysis and more like outright bias.

None of it detracted from the final result. Ryan captured the WBC welterweight belt in ruthless fashion, leaving Benn battered on the canvas and proving that Ward’s concerns did nothing to slow his offense.

Ryan wants pure adulation, not a clinic on his defensive holes while he’s wiping the floor with his opponent. That said, Ward’s style on the mic has always leaned toward the clinical perfectionist. He watches fights like a coach grading tape rather than an announcer calling the action in front of him. When one guy gets blown out in six minutes, an analyst naturally tries to keep the broadcast alive.

You highlight what the losing fighter was trying to set up, or you nitpick the winner’s posture, just to give viewers something tactical to chew on instead of admitting the bout turned into an uncompetitive mismatch. The problem is the contrast. When a fighter is landing sledgehammers and scoring multiple knockdowns, hearing the color commentator zero in on minor technical flaws sounds bizarre to fans and insulting to the fighter. It comes off less like balanced storytelling and more like refusing to acknowledge the obvious carnage.

Ryan accomplished what he set out to do by taking Benn out immediately. Complaining about the commentary afterward is unnecessary, but Ward probably could have read the room better and simply described the demolition occurring in front of him.
