When a fighter feels completely secure in their power and fundamentals, they do not usually need to spend half the round doing the salsa, looking at the cameras, or mocking the guy across from them. You do that stuff to dictate the terms, control the narrative, and keep the opponent mentally off-balance. But Rivera is looking right through it, calling it a psychological shield. It is a way to stay detached, so if things go wrong, it was just part of the show.

“I’m not too thrown off by his antics. I don’t think that those moves, those antics, come from bravery,” Rivera said in a video posted to social media.

“I think it’s a mask to hide his real fear. I’m just not impressed. A guy that disguises his flaws with these jokes. When it comes down to fight night, we’re gonna see how far them antics take him.”

‘Popeye’ Rivera might actually have Whittaker pegged perfectly here. When a guy spends that much time dancing, shimmying, and looking at the crowd, you have to wonder what happens when the lights get hot and someone starts hitting back with real bad intentions. It looks a lot like a defense mechanism to keep the pressure off his actual boxing ability.

The fans who see him as just an entertainer are probably closer to the truth than the promotional machine wants to admit. It is easy to look like a defensive wizard when you are fighting hand-picked opposition, but the trenches are a completely different story.

Rivera also predicted that a victory over the unbeaten British contender would shock many fans, even though he believes the outcome should not come as a surprise.

“The world is going to say, ‘Oh my gosh, I couldn’t believe it! The biggest upset!’ When I knew all along,” said Rivera.

When you look at ‘The Big Four’ at light heavyweight, the gap becomes massive.

Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol are elite, masterclass operators. Beterbiev would walk through those dance moves and chop him down, while Bivol would simply outclass him for 12 rounds without breaking a sweat. David Benavidez brings a relentless, suffocating pressure that forces a fighter to stand and fight, and Whittaker has shown nothing to suggest he can handle that kind of grueling warfare. Even Zak Chelli operates at a level of gritty, proven professionalism that makes Whittaker’s flashy style look like a massive gamble.

The fight will take place on the undercard of the Jaron Ennis vs. Xander Zayas event at Barclays Center. It will be Whittaker’s first professional bout in the United States.

Whittaker (11-0-1, 8 KOs), an Olympic silver medalist, is coming off a first-round knockout of Braian Suarez on April 18. The 29-year-old has been heavily promoted as one of boxing’s rising stars and enters the fight as a clear favorite.

Rivera (27-2, 20 KOs) brings considerably more professional experience. The 35-year-old pushed former two-division world champion Badou Jack to a split decision in 2022 and has won his last two fights since suffering a majority decision loss to Luis Antonio Tejeda in the Dominican Republic.

Whittaker is 29 years old now, so the clock is ticking on the prospect label. Rivera has been in there with real fighters like Badou Jack and knows what actual world-class power and pressure feel like. If Rivera can take away the space, ignore the clowning, and force Whittaker to fight a real, ugly dogfight in Brooklyn, we are going to find out very quickly if Ben is a legitimate contender or just a hype train built on viral clips.

The real test is always the same for guys who rely on the theatrical routine. What happens when the opponent refuses to play the role of the frustrated straight man?

If Rivera marches forward, eats a flashy jab, and just keeps coming with heavy hands, the choreography goes right out the window. If Whittaker gets forced into a gritty, corner-of-the-ring slugfest where he has to grit his teeth and trade, we will see instantly whether that showmanship turns into survival mode. Brooklyn crowds do not tolerate a circus act either, so if he starts dancing instead of fighting, the arena will let him hear it.

Saturday night’s fight gives Rivera an opportunity to score the biggest win of his career while testing whether Whittaker’s growing reputation matches his ability inside the ring.
