“For me, I think Rocky Marciano was overrated,” Prograis said on social media. “He retired undefeated, right? But in this book, I bought this book about Sonny Liston. It said right here about Rocky Marciano that ‘his good fortune was to rise to prominence at a time when his major competitors were either old, like 37-year-old Joe Louis.’ He was 37 when he fought him. Joe Walcott was 37 years old. A natural light heavyweight like Ezzard Charles was 34 years old, and then Archie Moore was 41 at the time.”

The overall point has some merit, but several ages quoted by Prograis are inaccurate. Louis was 37, but Walcott was 38 when Marciano took his heavyweight title in September 1952. Charles was 32 in their first fight and turned 33 before the rematch, not 34. Moore’s birth year remains disputed, leaving him either 38 or 41 when he challenged Marciano in 1955.

Prograis also accused Marciano of avoiding 6-foot-3 Cuban contender Nino Valdes because of his size.

“They had a Cuban fighter called Nino Valdes, and he didn’t want to fight him,” Prograis said. “He said he was too big. So I know a lot of older guys say that Rocky Marciano was this and undefeated this. But I feel Rocky Marciano was overrated at the time.”

Valdes had a legitimate case after rising to the top of the heavyweight rankings, but saying Marciano simply refused to face him leaves out part of the story.

The Cuban lost a 15-round title eliminator to Moore in May 1955. Marciano then met Moore four months later and stopped him in the ninth round. Valdes also suffered numerous defeats during Marciano’s championship reign, making the claim that he was deliberately avoided difficult to prove.

Marciano’s leading opponents were older, and his era lacked the talent found in later generations. Still, Walcott, Charles, and Moore remained dangerous elite fighters. Those victories do not settle every historical argument, but dismissing his entire career as fortunate goes too far.
