Fernando Mendoza’s football rise has already made him the face of the Las Vegas Raiders’ future, but his latest achievement came away from the field.

The rookie quarterback has officially graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, securing a business degree before beginning his first NFL season.

Fernando Mendoza turns second chances into memorable moments for Raiders fans

As highlighted by ClutchPoints, Mendoza graduated from Cal rather than Indiana, despite ending his college career with the Hoosiers.

That detail makes the story more interesting because Mendoza’s final college season was defined by his historic run at Indiana, where he led the program to a perfect 16-0 season and a national championship.

He also won the Heisman Trophy, turning himself from a promising transfer into the top quarterback in the country.

The Raiders then selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, making him the centerpiece of their rebuild.

Mendoza’s Cal degree adds to unusual path

Mendoza’s academic achievement is not a side note to his football story.

He began his college career at Cal, where he studied at the Haas School of Business before later transferring to Indiana.

That route means he left Berkeley as a football player, became a national champion elsewhere, and then still finished the degree he started.

It also fits the image Mendoza has built as one of the more disciplined and unusual young quarterbacks entering the league.

His college path did not follow a straight line. He was not always treated like a future No. 1 pick, and his rise came through patience, development, and a major leap after transferring.

Raiders get more than a quarterback

For Las Vegas, the graduation only strengthens the sense that Mendoza brings more than talent to the franchise.

The Raiders are betting on him as their long-term answer at quarterback, but they are also getting a player who has shown he can handle responsibility, pressure and long-term goals.

That matters in a market where every mistake will be magnified.

Mendoza will now move from college star to NFL rookie with a national championship, a Heisman Trophy, and a business degree already behind him.

The next challenge will be much harder.

Las Vegas needs him to turn promise into wins, and Mendoza will have to prove that the maturity that carried him through college can survive the speed and pressure of the NFL.
