Marco Palestra’s path to his Chelsea competitive debut is becoming more clear after the latest update on his training situation.

Today’s Chelsea Confidential from the Daily Mail has an update on the fitness of Marco Palestra, who we’ve yet to see in a competitive game for Chelsea.

Kieran Gill reports that the wing back has now started doing individual drills out on the grass with one of Xabi Alonso’s coaches. The next step is a return to group training, then he’s available for selection for the first team. Palestra played an important role in preseason, and Alonso seems a big fan of what he can bring on both flanks.

Palestra’s minor issues turns into a month out

It certainly doesn’t sound like a bad injury (we don’t have much clarity on what exactly he’s hurt), but it’s been worse than we thought initially. He picked it up in training in the days leading up to the season-opener against Fulham at the end of August. So it’s been three weeks or so since he did it, and he’s only just got back to individual training now. Assuming he needs a week of group training before he’s considered, it’s likely going to end up as a month out.

Not the best way to start your time at a new club. Thankfully he already had multiple preseason games to show what he can do.

    In other news…

A self-flagellant Xabi Alonso blamed himself for Chelsea’s issues in the first half last night. It seems a little harsh.

The benefits of not playing European football are obvious – the problems are only now starting to make themselves clear.
