Oscar De La Hoya believes Gervonta Davis’ professional record should have a loss on it ahead of his potential comeback fight.

The 31-year-old is said to be in negotiations for a WBA lightweight title clash with Floyd Schofield Jr, offering ‘Tank’ the opportunity to reclaim his old belt.

Davis retained the world title following a controversial draw with Lamont Roach in March 2025, but has since become the sanctioning body’s ‘champion in recess’ at 135lbs.

This is partly because of his inactivity but also due to the American’s issues outside the ring, where he has been faced with allegations of domestic violence.

It now seems that Davis could soon return to action, however, with the potential Schofield fight being lined up for a date in either September or October.

These negotiations involve Schofield’s promoter, Golden Boy boss De La Hoya, who insists that ‘Tank’ should have suffered his first professional loss against Roach.

Their encounter ended in a draw after referee Steve Willis gave a no-knockdown call in round nine, when Davis clearly touched the canvas following a shot from Roach.

As a result, De La Hoya has told Fight Hub TV that Roach should be coming off back-to-back victories over ‘Tank’ and Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, with whom he boxed to a less controversial draw in December.

“Roach is a great fighter in his own right. He’s coming off some really good wins; I say wins because I think he really did win against ‘Tank’ Davis, and I thought he did an excellent job against ‘Pitbull’.”

If the respective teams of Davis and Schofield are unable to strike a deal by June 22, then their mandated showdown will be sent to a purse bid hearing.
