Non league club Sunderland West End fume after a vote sees them refused entry into the 11th tier despite initial acceptance.
Two months ago, after careful consideration, they resigned from the Northern League Division Two (10th tier), as they faced a challenging time.
On the 28th of July, they announced that they would have been welcomed to play in the Wearside League, taking the place of Silksworth who recently folded.
But a week later, after confirming their fellow league opponents, their fixture list, management, and begun training, a short time to prepare for the new season, they have been dealt with a surprise blow.
A club statement on the 28th of July read: “We are delighted to announce the return of Sunderland West End FC’s men’s first team.
“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone involved in making this possible, particularly Silksworth, The Wearside League and the Durham FA for their support throughout the process. While we were saddened by the recent folding of fellow non-league side Silksworth, subsequent discussions have enabled us to take our place in the Wearside League.
“Over the coming days, we will be sharing further details regarding our next steps, including updates on management and the playing squad.
“Following our departure from the Northern League last season, the intention was always to return to senior football at the appropriate time.
“While this has come sooner than anticipated, the continued growth of our club – now boasting over 30 youth teams-made the reintroduction of a men’s side a natural and necessary progression for our players.
“In addition, with our ladies’ team now playing home fixtures at the Hub, alongside a thriving girls’ youth setup, we are proud to offer a clear development pathway for all.
“As a committee, our aim is to develop a clear pathway from our youth teams into the men’s first team over the next decade and beyond. With over 300 young players now involved, our focus is on nurturing their passion for the club, instilling pride in wearing the badge, and ensuring they represent West End for the love of the game and the community it embodies, nothing else.
“This marks a significant milestone for Sunderland West End FC, and we thank everyone who has contributed to making this return possible. Further updates will follow shortly.”

Then on the 4th of August, they wrote: “Following a meeting this evening, we have been informed that we have been refused entry to Wearside Premier League.
“As recently as last week, it had been agreed that we would take the place of Silksworth CW FC in the Premier Division.
“Subsequent to that decision, however, the league received a number of complaints from clubs and individuals, which have ultimately led to a vote on our admission.
“After being notified of our place in the Premier Division, an exceptional amount of work was carried out behind the scenes, both on and off the pitch.
“Dan and Neal worked tirelessly to assemble a squad within a matter of days, organise training sessions, and prepare for what we believed would be our first fixture this coming Wednesday.
“In addition, kit was ordered and several key steps were taken to support the return of football at Ford Hub.
“Naturally, we are extremely disappointed and frustrated by this decision and would like to clarify that our decision to take Silksworth’s place in the Premier Division was made with the aim of creating a clear pathway for our youth players in the future and continuing level 7 football in the West of the city.
“We find it devastating that in a time when clubs are folding and player participation is dwindling, a league who are supposed to be custodian’s of the game choose not to admit a team looking to continue to represent an area that the league is named after, particularly when we were told there was pressure from the county FA not to allow us to enter. Gutted.”

Because we weren’t a new team. Silksworth were packing in and our manager was Silksworth manager wanted to keep the club going. We said we would play under the name and even play there but they said we could change the name.

Silksworth and West end merged together. We would have called ourselves Silksworth West end however was told that wasn’t necessary. Why should we have to start from the bottom?

Dan Martin: The Wearside Football League can you please explain why we were given passes, balls, team sheets etc, to then call a meeting two days before our first league game to have us removed from the league? Funny that the ones who have complained are the ones hoying the most money about for players, not one player we’ve brought in has taken a penny, says a lot about the lads who’s turned down money to be at the club, love to know the reasons behind complaining

Michael Cole: sounds like the Wearside league have made an absolute mess of this. without knowing any of the details i get why some clubs may have complained but as there are two clubs have come out and said they havent been asked to vote then answers need to be given by the league. incidentally surely for a decision this impactful surely an EGM should be called?
Cyril Brown: Whatever the situation regarding any rules applying to new teams having to start at the bottom. If the league notified West End that they could take their place in the Premier League then two days before their opening fixture tell them they can’t then that’s just a disgrace and simply tin pot management. A lot of money has been spent here, a lot of time and commitment wasted because of these hopeless individuals.

We weren’t aware of any vote or anything though
Shaun Cockburn: My son plays for the youth teams and he was absolutely guttered when the men’s team dropped out off the league at the end of last season as he and a lot off his friend’s and a lot off our youth teams players loved going up the hub and watching the games . They were absolutely buzzing when the league and fa allowed the side there place in the league , then to strip them off this two days before the first game is absolutely scandalous!!! It’s not just the team and the committee of the club that suffer it’s the whole community!

Emma Chicken: I’m totally baffled by this decision. I’m secretary of one of the teams in the Wearside league and haven’t been asked to vote on this. 🤷♀️ Equally there are other teams that have been allowed to re-brand as ‘new’ clubs. I’m gobsmacked at a time when non-league is struggling that they take this decision without discussing with the wider football community!
