The TNA World title was on the line when Jeff Hardy challenged Nic Nemeth on the August 13 episode of TNA iMPACT. The match was another chapter in the growing rivalry between The Hardys and The Nemeth Brothers.
The rivalry between the two teams basically started to show which brother duo is the greatest tag team in wrestling history. On the July 30 episode of iMPACT, TNA Director of Authority Santino Marella announced that the two teams would face each other in a Steel Cage match for the TNA World Tag Team title at TNA Lockdown on August 23.
However, before that match the brothers would have a chance to settle things in singles competition.
Matt Hardy defeated Ryan Nemeth on the August 6 episode of iMPACT. That left Jeff Hardy and Nic Nemeth to settle their side of the rivalry.
Nic Nemeth beats Jeff Hardy, retains TNA World Championship
The match was taped on July 30 at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Jeff Hardy came out aggressive from the start. He dropkicked Nemeth and sent him outside the ring before following him with a diving clothesline. Hardy then slammed Nemeth’s head into the ring steps.
Nemeth eventually took control and repeatedly drove Hardy’s head into the top turnbuckle. He followed that up with an elbow drop and nearly scored the first major pinfall of the match.
The champion continued focusing on Hardy’s head. At one point, he caught Hardy while he was climbing the ropes and left him hanging upside down in the corner. But Hardy found ways to fight back. He avoided a corner attack and later survived a DDT to keep the match going.
Hardy countered Nemeth’s Fameasser with a powerbomb. He then hit the Twist of Fate. When he tried for another one, Nemeth pushed him away and answered with a superkick.
Later in the match, Hardy countered Nemeth’s Danger Zone with a cutter. He then climbed to the top rope and went for the Swanton Bomb, but Nemeth got his knees up. He went for a cover, but Hardy kicked out once again.
The two continued trading counters. Hardy blocked another kick and tried to hit the Twist of Fate. This time, Nemeth found his opening. He countered Hardy and hit the Danger Zone before covering him for the three-count.
