Newport County search for what will be their fourth boss in two years as Christian Fuchs leaves after 7 months in charge.

On the eve of pre-season preparations getting underway, the Exiles find themselves without a manager for the third successive summer, having seen the likes of Graham Coughlan, Nelson Jardim and David Hughes depart before Fuchs.

Of the 31 games Fuchs managed, he won 9, drew 5 and lost 17, Newport finishing the 2025/26 season in 20th place with 43 points from 46 games played, 4 points above the drop zone.

Newport County can confirm that Christian Fuchs has made the decision to step away from his role as manager.

A brief statement by the club website: “Newport County can confirm that Christian Fuchs has made the decision to step away from his role as manager.

“During his time at Rodney Parade, Christian successfully guided Newport County to League Two survival, ensuring the club retained its EFL status at the end of the 2025-26 season.

“Everyone at Newport County would like to thank Christian for his hard work, commitment and professionalism during his time at the club.

“The club wishes Christian every success and happiness for the future.”

They added: “Newport County can today confirm that Chris Todd has stepped into the role of interim manager with immediate effect.

“Chris takes charge as the club enters an important period, and he does so with the full backing of the board, staff, and players. His knowledge of the squad, understanding of the club’s values, and commitment to its supporters make him well placed to lead the team in this interim capacity.

“Mark Smith will retain his position as assistant manager and will continue to play a central role within the coaching setup, providing valuable continuity and support to Chris and the wider group as preparations continue.

“Everyone at the club is united behind Chris, Mark, and the squad, and we look forward to getting behind the team for the start of pre-season.

“Newport County asks supporters and the media for their patience during this period. Chris has our full confidence as he leads the team, and in due course we will carry out a considered process to determine the right long-term appointment for the club’s ethos and ambitions.”

Newport County AFC Supporters’ Trust said: “The Board of the Trust share everyone’s disappointment and surprise at Christian Fuchs’ sudden decision to step down as manager yesterday. Understandably, supporters want to know the reasons behind such decisions which can be many and varied (and often personal).

“We are working with the Club to ensure supporters are kept informed of developments but as with any employment matter there are limits to what can be shared openly without the permission of employer and employee.

“We also recognise that the timing of Christian’s decision is particularly difficult with just over a month to go before the start of the new sedson.

“Interim arrangements are in place to continue preparations for the season ahead and we will work with the Club to ensure that supporters are kept informed of progress on the essential process of appointing a new manager.”

Fuchs said after securing survival on the final day, as per NWE Mail: “Everyone at the football club knew what was at stake.

“It’s an incredible feeling, it really is. It’s been a season of a lot of ups and downs. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster at times.

“At the end, when you stand here with our fans away from home, you get the crucial win that keeps you up, it’s pure joy.

“I’m so proud of the players for getting the job done.

“I’m so happy for the fans, they have been incredible. You can see what it means to them, the community, to the club.

“It’s an incredible achievement and I’m pleased for everybody.

“Bobby Kamwa has been incredible. He’s lived up to the occasion when we’ve really needed him. His last two goals have been two crucial goals.

“The boys have been brilliant and I’m so happy for them. I reminded them to focus on themselves.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Newport search for their fourth boss in two years as Christian Fuchs leaves after 7 months in charge…

@PoZu72: ????? Another summer where we’re in the end of June and a manager leaves Huw Jenkins. Fucking clown show. Thanks for everything Fuchs. Will always be grateful. Also if this means that takeover is close, He’s already off to a disaster start.

@carljc21: Please can someone with money and ambition buy this club before it hits the national league..

@CountyIssy: What the????? All preseason comms say Fuchs side, Fuchs Newport County….it never occurred to me that he wouldn’t t be staying. Shocked.

@andy_ncfc: Wtf – I thought something was off when one of the new lads said “hopefully I can get on with the new manager” odd statement for a guy that’s been here more the half a season

@DanMills__: I don’t even know how to react to this… Thanks for everything Christian

@MarkGCoffey: I’m shocked and very saddened to hear this. I thought Fuchs was good for County, and with time and the right signings would have driven us forward. All the positivity of the last week has been swiped away with this post.

@DOsull27: Always something with this club. Fuck sake

@dangrace97: It’s bad enough he’s leaving, but the fact he’s been in post all summer and we’re looking for a new manager on the eve of pre season shows how much of a shambles we are off the pitch

@LP15393: Kamwa went and he thought fuck this

@SocialMediaJon1: L1 job offer or some kind of position back at Leicester? Shame thought he was good manager for Newport did amazing job to keep you up last season

@timcwegener: It’s OK. Jenkins thinks he knows better anyway

@AndrewPenman1: Sad to see Christian go. Hats off to him for saving County from relegation in his first proper managerial role. Guess he didn’t fancy another battle to beat the drop. Club desperately needs some stability…

@PoZu72: Fuck this football club. I’m not even exaggerating. Shitshow

@JustPugy: What the Fuchs going on?

@NCAFCThoughts: Very worrying without knowing what’s happened behind the scenes. Having to start over, again, with a squad that gradually gets weaker and weaker each summer isn’t sustainable.

@diesel_y2j: Just one fucking summer without us being a complete shit show is all I ask.

    @lcfcjoss:
    Wtf he did good there
Would love if he had a role with us

@GabSutton: Late June, the eve of pre-season training return, is very unusual timing for a manager to leave, especially off the back of six signings in four days. Suggests perhaps a change of personal circumstances but, without speculating too much, I also don’t think we can rule out the possibility of some kind of internal disagreement with the hierarchy, or differences on recruitment. Could be family reasons, but right now we can only go off face value – and on that alone it does seem a bit strange.

@Jack20939278: No doubt we will cover this shambles up with Omari Patrick n Shane Macca to please some fans, overshadowing the horrendous running of the club, pure silence from Jenkins and mainly the supporters trust who are supposedly “the voice of the fans”, clubs rotten from top to bottom

Chris Collins: With all the non communication from the County I can only think one thing, that we are about to be taken over by someone. The only reason why the silence is deafening is because the club is going through the process and it would not be appropriate to let any information out to the public until this was completed.

Rob Santwris: Firstly, none of us know exactly what has happened. Personally, I’m not overly worried that CF has gone. I think he’ll become a very good manager one day, but perhaps not at a League Two club like Newport where every decision has to be made on a tight budget. My biggest concern is the way Huw and the Trust conduct things. The three directors are experienced enough to know that communication with the fans is absolutely essential. Too often it feels as though the Trust is more interested in backing Huw than representing the people who pay their subscriptions and elected them to have a voice. Please, start standing up for the fans. That is what you are there to do. I spoke to someone yesterday who I would describe as a true Newport County super fan. He has put more time, money, love and heart into this football club than most of us ever could. I was genuinely shocked when he said to me, “If I never stepped foot in Rodney Parade again, I wouldn’t be bothered.” That should ring alarm bells for everyone involved. If people running the club can make someone like that feel so disconnected, then something is clearly not right. Please, Huw and the Trust, engage with the supporters. Listen to them. Communicate with them. Bring them with you. Because once fans walk away, winning them back is far harder than keeping them on board in the first place.

Andrew Silverthorne: After a positive week.. of signings.. talk of a take over.. now the manager walks.. you can only guess.. probably not his signings …didn’t see any comments from him on the incoming players.. just seems really strange
