Nestor Bravo was stopped by Isaac Cruz, yet he left Pechanga Arena unconvinced that Pitbull carries the strength needed to handle Ryan Garcia at welterweight. That is a strange review from a man who had just been knocked out, but it came from the only person who felt Cruz’s punches Saturday night.
Bravo said Cruz’s awkward delivery caused more trouble than his raw power. His short stature, sudden lunges, and unusual punching angles prevented Bravo from seeing several of the shots that landed.
“He’s not the heaviest hitter. He’s just a little uncomfortable with his height,” Bravo said during the postfight press conference. “There were a couple of shots I really didn’t see coming. It’s not that his hands are heavy. It’s the shots you don’t see coming that hurt you. I don’t feel his physical strength is that much at 147. He’s just really uncomfortable, but he’s a great champion.”
Cruz dropped Bravo and stopped him in the sixth round, so this was hardly a harmless night for the Puerto Rican. His argument was that timing and visibility hurt him more than crushing force. He also claimed an accidental clash of heads affected him from the opening round, though he repeatedly credited Cruz as the better fighter.
The distinction becomes important if Cruz climbs from light welterweight to challenge Ryan. Cruz creates force by dipping low and springing upward with hooks and overhand rights. Opponents look down to locate him, then lose sight of the punches coming from beneath their normal line of vision.
Ryan’s upright stance creates danger in both directions. His habit of pulling straight back leaves his raised chin available for Cruz’s leaping right hand. Yet that height also gives Ryan a clean view of Cruz dipping before his attack. Ryan can fire the left hook as Cruz lunges forward or catch him with an uppercut as he rises.
Bravo lacked the hand speed to punish those entries consistently. Ryan does not. Cruz cannot leap from long range without first occupying Ryan with a jab or feints. Charging into one of Ryan’s counters would multiply the impact because Cruz’s own body weight would be moving into the punch.
The physical exchanges may be just as important. Cruz uses his low center of gravity to bump light welterweights off balance and create room for body punches. Ryan is taller, broader and accustomed to carrying more weight. He can lean on Cruz in the clinches, place pressure across his neck and make those repeated lunges increasingly tiring.
Cruz also tends to pursue opponents along direct lines rather than trapping them with lateral footwork. That approach gives Ryan the distance he prefers for setting his feet and releasing the left hook. If Cruz merely follows him, the fight becomes target practice.
Pitbull’s best route is to survive the early counters, crowd Ryan’s arms, and force him against the ropes. Ryan dislikes prolonged inside exchanges and often grabs while waiting for the referee. Cruz has to turn the match into a rough body-punching fight before Ryan settles into a rhythm.
But moving from 135 to 140 and then 147 asks Cruz’s chin and power to keep passing new tests. If Bravo felt no genuine welterweight force, Ryan may let his hands go without respecting what comes back. That confidence would make an already dangerous style matchup much worse for Cruz.
