Matthias Jaissle makes it clear Newcastle need to land deals after suffering a 3-1 pre-season defeat to Everton.

It was his second match in charge of the Magpies, Thierno Barry and Iliman Ndiaye had the Toffees 2-0 up before half time, Tyrique George made it three in the 73rd minute, before Harvey Barnes grabbed an 85th minute consolation goal.

22,982 fans were inside Murrayfield, Scotland for the fixture, Everton fans taunting Newcastle, singing they are “going down”.

Team lineups, as per nufc.co.uk and toffeeweb.com:

Everton: Travers, Patterson (53′ Röhl), Tarkowski, Keane (O’Brien), Mykolenko (77′ Aznou), Hackney (83′ Foster), Ndiaye (64′ Dibling), Dewsbury-Hall (64′ Alcaraz [Y:66′], Armstrong, George, Barry (64′ Beto).

    Subs: King, G Pickford, Graham.

Jaissle said after defeat to Everton and looking ahead to the league opener against Liverpool: “For sure, we cannot be at our peak [against Liverpool], this is clear. We have just been working for a couple of days together, and Liverpool is already next week now.

“We use every day in the best possible way, that’s the only thing we can control to make progress.

“Then, it will be the same with the transfer market. Hopefully, there will be progress there too.

“We have already spoken about it in the press conference, and I think everybody has seen the matches and are smart enough to see the needs in the squad.

“I will always be consistent with my approach – we handle these things internally.

“We are aware of what we need, and as you know, there is still some time.

“It is not a case of just wishing for things to happen and then they happen – that is not the case in football or in life.

“But internally, we are really clear.”

When questioned if he was confident sporting director Ross Wilson would deliver what he wanted this month, Jaissle added: “It’s not a wish concert, not in football, not in life.

“But again, internally we’re really clear.

“There could be because there are still a couple of days to go, but it’s not in my hands.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Matthias Jaissle makes it clear Newcastle need to land deals after a 3-1 defeat to Everton…

@geordiejosh: Fully behind him. Let’s get him some signings though, sharpish.

@lrobson98: Back him. He needs minimum 4 top quality signings and fast.

@nufc2026: The clubs failing him so far. Absolute embarrassment

@MaxwellA98: That hair ain’t gonna be black for long, Matthias 😂

@stevenek01ox: He has no faults at all! It’s the board that is sitting on the budget we need to finance the team in the transfer window! Same old shit. They are clearly not willing to learn from the past! It’s sickening. I fear for the worst this season.

@GraemeEccles: I like him, he knows he needs quality adding to the squad also. Hopefully there’s deals being worked on behind the scenes. #nufc

@Aron_Johansen_: Give him some fucking players man! @NUFC #NUFC

@agbnufc_: Signed some good players but the same dross remains unfortunately. Some should be nowhere near this club by year 5 into project.

    @Nufc2Everything:
10 days until our season kicks off.
    No New Full back
    No New Right winger
    No New Centre attacking Midfielder
    No New Striker
    No New Centre back
    NO CAPTAIN…
Don’t anyone dare blame Matthias Jaissle this season if those aren’t checked off because it’s the people above who are at fault. #NUFC

@marc_ricalton: The club dont seem bothered about spending good money on good experienced players but come May when we are near/at the bottom of the league it will be the managers fault and not the owners the manager needs the tools to do the job give him them or are we just a selling club #nufc

@UnitedSince1892: I honestly feel sorry for him already. It’s a relegation battle with this current squad.

@markchoake: Saying it it as it is our manager #NUFC

@GallowgateEnder: I’m not sure they are aware of just how many players we need

@AdamP1242: They are real concerns and signs we have to deal with ahead of this season, desperately have to improve the squad in the transfer market but some decent signs at parts today. I still think Newcastle United will be fine and may even end up having a good season if they land all the deals they desperately need. Criminal they haven’t signed a right back yet ahead of Liverpool when we have known for so long the real limitations over there ❌ #NUFC

@CharIieBennett: Home from Edinburgh. Back this man. Give him the tools required. Right now, it feels as though Newcastle are sleepwalking into worrying season. The PL kicks off in 10 days and the squad is nowhere near good enough. I feel for Matthias Jaissle… 3-5 signings needed. #NUFC

@JackCun96: Looking back at last night, and the positivity is still there for me, but it totally depends on new signings arriving. You can see Jaissle’s ideas and how Newcastle United can become a force. But four first-team players need to arrive.
    RB
    CB
    RW
    CM
And it’s not even a case of trusting the board or anything, they have to do it, or you have set Jaissle up to fail, it really is that simple. Give him the tools he needs, and we can look forward to the season. #NUFC
