Julian “The Hawk” Jackson solidified his standing as one of boxing’s most feared punchers on July 30, 1988, when he stopped former IBF champion Buster Drayton in the third round to retain his WBA junior middleweight title.

The scheduled 12-round championship bout lasted just 2:57 of the third. Jackson, 27, weighed 153 pounds, matching Drayton on the scales. Tony Perez served as referee.

Jackson entered the night determined to prove his title victory over In Chul Baek eight months earlier was no fluke. Drayton provided a stern first test. The Philadelphia veteran had built a reputation as one of the division’s toughest fighters and had rarely been stopped despite facing top competition.

Drayton absorbed heavy punishment from the opening bell but refused to give ground, firing back with combinations whenever Jackson paused his attack. Jackson mixed crushing hooks to the body with straight rights upstairs, forcing the challenger to fight at a relentless pace.

Jackson scored the first knockdown in the second round with a right hand that caught Drayton off balance. The former champion quickly regained his feet and famously laughed, making it clear he had no intention of surrendering the title opportunity.

That defiance carried into the third round. Drayton enjoyed his best stretch of the fight by landing several clean shots to Jackson’s head and briefly pushing the champion onto the defensive. The rally ended abruptly.

Jackson answered with a barrage of right hands before detonating a left hook that landed flush on Drayton’s jaw. The challenger froze for a split second before collapsing flat on his back in one of Jackson’s signature knockouts. Although Drayton attempted to continue, Perez halted the bout as ringside physicians climbed into the ring.

The victory strengthened Jackson’s reputation as one of boxing’s premier knockout artists. He followed with successful title defenses, including his spectacular one-punch knockout of Terry Norris in 1989, before moving to middleweight and capturing the WBC championship.

Drayton remained active for another seven years after the Jackson fight before retiring in 1995.
