John Cena may be done wrestling matches, but WWE is still putting him in major spotlight situations.
WrestleVotes Radio revealed through Fightful Select that Cena is expected to face Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles in the featured WWE matchup at this year’s Fanatics Games during Fanatics Fest in New York City.
“WrestleVotes Radio has learned that the featured WWE matchup at Fanatics Games is expected to pit John Cena against Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles.”
This will not be a traditional wrestling match. Cena and Lyles are expected to compete as part of the athletic challenges featured throughout the Fanatics Games, which brings together stars from wrestling, football, basketball and other sports. Lyles brings serious speed to the matchup as one of the biggest names in track and field, while Cena will be stepping into another physical competition months after ending his WWE in-ring career.
Cena retired from active competition in December, but he remains under WWE contract and continues to appear for the company outside the ring.

Cena versus Lyles was not the only WWE matchup planned for the event. Rhea Ripley had been scheduled to compete against former NFL star Rob Gronkowski, but those plans were dropped after Ripley suffered an injury. Ripley is still expected to travel to New York City and handle her other scheduled Fanatics Fest commitments throughout the weekend.
“As of last weekend, Rhea Ripley versus Rob Gronkowski was slotted in for the festivities. As of now, that match is off due to Ripley’s injury.”
“The WWE Women’s Champion is still scheduled to be in New York City to fulfill other appearance obligations at Fanatics Fest.”
Cena’s involvement comes as WWE continues finding ways to keep him connected to the company after his retirement match. There has also been talk of WWE launching the first John Cena Classic before the end of 2026, with Cena expected to have a major role in the event.
