For the first time, Jimmy openly admitted that he’s thought about having his own run as a world champion. The difference is, unlike a lot of wrestlers, he isn’t interested in politicking for the spot. If it happens, he’ll run with it. If it doesn’t, he says he’s still walking away proud of everything he’s already accomplished.
Speaking with Sports Illustrated, Jimmy was asked whether seeing Jey Uso capture the World Heavyweight Championship—and Sami Zayn win a world title as well—made him start thinking about what a singles championship run might look like for himself. The answer came without any hesitation.
“Man, of course it do… especially when you see your brothers doing it.”
Even so, Jimmy said he’s never been wired to fight his way to the front of the line. Throughout his career, he’s been more concerned with playing whatever role WWE needed and doing what was best for his family than lobbying for individual accolades.
“I’m not the type that’ll push up to the front of the line. I’m always ready to play my role or whatever I need to do for my family.”
That doesn’t mean the dream has disappeared. Jimmy admitted he’d love the chance to prove himself as a singles world champion, but only if the opportunity comes naturally instead of being forced.
“Please believe I will grab that ball and I’m running with it… Big Jim would love to have a solo time. But… time is everything. If the powers that be let it happen, or if it gets organic, I’m right there with it.”
There’s another reason Jimmy isn’t losing sleep over whether the title run ever happens. He already feels like he’s won. After nearly 17 years in WWE, Jimmy said watching his brothers succeed feels just as rewarding as any championship he could hold himself. As far as he’s concerned, he’s already made it.
“When I see my brothers up, I’m up. So, a title don’t necessarily need to be around my waist for me to feel like I made it already… I’m blessed and very happy to be here.”
Still, don’t mistake that for a lack of ambition. Jimmy made it clear that if WWE ever decides it’s finally his time, he won’t hesitate for a second.
“If the opportunity presents itself, please believe I will grab that ball and I’m running with it, bro.”
Jimmy isn’t asking WWE to make him a world champion. But after finally admitting the goal has been on his mind, it’s safe to say he’d be ready if that call ever comes.
