There was no mention of Mikaelian, the September 12 date, T-Mobile Arena, Paramount+ or the unresolved status of the WBC championship. Casual followers were given no information about the opponent or the importance of the Garcia vs. Benn co-feature.

That is an odd approach from a fighter who wants greater recognition. Opetaia has repeatedly talked about becoming undisputed and proving that he is the leading cruiserweight, yet one of the most important fights available in his division is being promoted like an ordinary return.

    WBC Title Remains Uncertain

The championship situation should give Opetaia and Zuffa plenty to discuss. Mikaelian holds the WBC belt, but the sanctioning body ordered him to defend against unified champion David Benavidez.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has said Mikaelian is subject to being stripped if he proceeds with Opetaia instead. The organization sent a formal letter to Mikaelian’s promoter, Don King, requesting clarification about his plans.

Unless the WBC grants approval, its championship cannot change hands in the bout. Opetaia’s Ring Magazine and Zuffa Boxing titles are the only belts officially listed as being at stake.

Federal action is already being pursued against the IBF after Opetaia lost that organization’s title following his March fight with Brandon Glanton. With another sanctioning body threatening to remove a belt from the championship picture, he has an obvious subject around which to rally his followers. He has made almost no public use of it.

    Opetaia Leaves Valuable Promotion Unused

A more lucrative fight is also available beyond Mikaelian. Opetaia accused Benavidez of running and hiding when the September bout was announced. José Benavidez Sr. responded this week by calling for his son to face Opetaia in May 2027.

David Benavidez first has to defeat Michal Cieslak in their planned December 12 fight, while Opetaia must handle Mikaelian. Still, the exchange gives both sides material that can build interest in the current fight and a far richer one next year.

Instead, the hostility has gone quiet. Opetaia is not questioning Benavidez, discussing the proposed May date or explaining how beating Mikaelian would strengthen his claim to the division. Those subjects offer far more promotional value than a calendar reminder.

Mikaelian has not fought since defeating Badou Jack by unanimous decision in December 2025. Promotional trouble involving King kept him inactive, and Mikaelian said he moved forward with Opetaia because he could not continue waiting for his career to advance.

He is not merely a name placed beneath Opetaia on a major card. Mikaelian is entering with experience, frustration and every incentive to spoil Zuffa’s plans for its cruiserweight champion. If he wins, talk of Opetaia facing Benavidez in May disappears.

Ryan Garcia against Conor Benn will naturally receive most of the advertising. They are bigger personalities fighting in a division that attracts more mainstream attention.

Zuffa nevertheless signed Opetaia as one of its first major champions and placed him in the co-feature of its highest-profile card to date. This is an opportunity to introduce him to Paramount+ viewers who may be unfamiliar with the cruiserweight division. Treating the event like an untelevised club fight wastes that exposure.

Fighters cannot control every decision made by a promoter, but Opetaia controls his own account. A short video covering Mikaelian, the championship dispute and the proposed Benavidez fight would give followers something to anticipate.

Opetaia wants the recognition given to boxing’s biggest names. That requires more than winning after the bell rings. Fans first need to know why his fights deserve their attention.

The card streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the United States. The start time has not been announced.
