Israil Madrimov gave Terence Crawford one of the hardest fights of his career in August 2024. Two years later, the former WBA junior middleweight champion is 31 years old, inactive, and without a confirmed opponent.
Madrimov (11-2-1, 7 KOs) has fought only twice since losing his title to Crawford: a narrow decision defeat against Vergil Ortiz Jr. in February 2025 and a routine 10-round victory over Luis David Salazar last January.
Injuries, surgeries, and pneumonia contributed to his 11-month absence following the Ortiz fight. Those health problems explain one layoff. They do not explain why eight more months have passed since Madrimov defeated Salazar.
Crawford won their fight by scores of 116-112 and 115-113 twice, but the contest was far closer than many expected. Madrimov disrupted Crawford’s timing with feints, changes of rhythm and sudden right hands from unusual angles.
There was a solid case for Madrimov winning. He controlled distance during several of the early rounds and made Crawford reluctant to attack recklessly. Crawford finished strongly enough to receive the decision, although the fight never resembled the one-sided performance many had anticipated.
That night should have established Madrimov as one of the division’s most valuable contenders. Instead, he faced Ortiz six months later and lost another competitive decision.
Ortiz received scores of 115-113 twice and 117-111. The widest card did not reflect the contest Madrimov produced. His movement and upper-body feints repeatedly made Ortiz hesitate, but Madrimov’s low output allowed the busier fighter to take close rounds.
Madrimov’s greatest strength has also become a promotional weakness. He is extremely difficult to prepare for and rarely gives opponents a conventional target.
He shifts his weight, changes levels, and launches punches without following a predictable rhythm. His bouncing movement resembles an amateur style, but his physical strength and right hand make him far more dangerous than a point-scoring boxer.
The difficulty is that Madrimov does not produce many easy-to-score combinations. He often spends long periods feinting and searching for one clean opening. Against Crawford and Ortiz, that approach created tactical fights in which his opponent received credit for throwing more punches.
That style makes Madrimov a poor voluntary opponent for a champion. He brings limited commercial value, presents a high chance of defeat, and may make the champion look ordinary even if Madrimov loses another close decision.
Madrimov defeated Salazar by identical scores of 99-91 at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas. He controlled the fight and hurt Salazar late, but he also looked rusty and finished with heavy swelling around his left eye.
It was an understandable performance after knee and shoulder surgeries and lingering effects from pneumonia. The bout was supposed to restore his timing before a larger opportunity. Instead, the comeback has led to another long absence.
A fighter with only 14 professional bouts needs activity, especially after spending much of his career in the amateur system. Madrimov cannot refine his pacing or learn to convert close rounds from the gym. He needs fights.
Madrimov has been linked with Xander Zayas, Jermell Charlo, Bakhram Murtazaliev and even a move to middleweight for Janibek Alimkhanuly. None of those discussions has produced a signed contest.
A second fight with Crawford is no longer available following Crawford’s retirement. That leaves Madrimov chasing another champion without the title, audience or promotional leverage needed to dictate terms.
At 31, he does not have several years to wait for the division to open. His athletic style depends on fast reactions, explosive movement, and the ability to change direction without warning. Extended inactivity slowly removes the qualities that make him special.
Madrimov may have done enough to beat Crawford. He was also competitive enough to defeat Ortiz on another set of scorecards. Those performances showed he belongs among the best junior middleweights.
The disappointment is that boxing has given him almost no opportunity to prove it since.
