Artur Beterbiev has spent more than a year waiting for a trilogy fight with Dmitry Bivol, but every month that passes creates new problems. At 41 years old, inactivity is no longer just a scheduling issue. It raises legitimate questions about whether one of boxing’s most feared pressure fighters can return as the same fighter after such a long absence.
The former undisputed light heavyweight champion has not fought since dropping a majority decision to Bivol in February 2025. Many fans believed Beterbiev deserved the verdict after finishing the stronger of the two, making the lack of a third fight difficult to accept. Instead of settling the rivalry, injuries and promotional issues have kept the trilogy from happening.
Age is what separates this break from those earlier in Beterbiev’s career. He will celebrate his 42nd birthday in January 2027. Fighters who rely on precise footwork sometimes survive long breaks with little decline. Beterbiev’s style is different. He applies nonstop pressure, cuts off the ring, throws every punch with full power, and forces opponents to fight every second. That approach demands tremendous conditioning.
There were already signs in the rematch that Father Time was beginning to chip away at those physical advantages. Beterbiev appeared to lose steam around the middle rounds, allowing Bivol to dictate longer stretches of the fight than he had in their first meeting. His power remained dangerous, but the relentless pressure that had broken so many opponents became harder to maintain.
Beterbiev’s injury history makes the layoff even more concerning. Injuries have interrupted several training camps throughout his career, including the knee problem that postponed the first Bivol fight. At 41, simply getting through a full camp without setbacks becomes part of the challenge. Inactivity can help fighters recover, but extended breaks also make it more difficult to regain the rhythm that only active competition provides.
The difficult part is that meaningful options still exist. A third fight with Bivol remains unfinished business, while a clash with David Benavidez would immediately become one of boxing’s biggest attractions. Both fights still carry enormous appeal, but neither becomes easier to make as the calendar keeps moving forward.
Beterbiev has already secured his place among the greatest light heavyweights of his generation. The remaining question is whether the extended time away has taken away just enough of the aggressive style that made him so dominant. If the trilogy with Bivol finally happens, fans won’t just be judging who wins. They’ll also discover whether nearly two years of inactivity has finally caught up with one of boxing’s greatest pressure fighters.
