Chelsea are finally getting into gear and preparing to negotiate for a top Premier League centre back this summer.

The World Cup has reached the knockout stages, and the transfer window feels like it’s gone up a gear too.

Chelsea are closing in on their first signings, with a deal for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix on the way. All signs are pointing towards the Blues moving for the former Wolfsburg man, and on TalkSport this morning, transfer insider Ben Jacobs dropped in for an update on negotiations.

“Maxence Lacroix is moving club to club, and I would not be surprised if a formal bid is incoming,” Jacobs said.

“Palace would love to keep Lacroix, but he is also open to joining Chelsea, and it’ll be really interesting to see what kind of valuation Crystal Palace put on Lacroix’s head.”

We’re curious what that sum will be – we’d imagine they’ll be pushing for £60m or more and Chelsea will be trying to get them down to £50m or less. This battle could go on for some time, but at this point we’re pretty confident it ends up with a transfer.

    In other news…

Trevoh Chalobah continues to be linked with moves away from Chelsea, with multiple teams in Serie A apparently looking into signing him.

The big transfer news of the weekend was that Chelsea are moving for Granit Xhaka of Sunderland, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the interest.
