WWE has released footage showing what happened after the July 10 episode of SmackDown was abruptly cut off with Cody Rhodes heading toward the ring.
The show closed with GUNTHER attacking Nick Aldis after the SmackDown General Manager announced a major tag team match for Saturday Night’s Main Event. GUNTHER and Sami Zayn will face Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk and Cody Rhodes at Madison Square Garden on July 18.
GUNTHER was furious that Aldis did not give him the singles championship match he wanted. He attacked Aldis, locked him in a chokehold and left him limp while WWE officials struggled to pull him away. Cody Rhodes then made his entrance, but SmackDown was abruptly cut off before viewers could see how the confrontation played out.
WWE later posted the full footage on social media. GUNTHER circled the ring and started walking up the ramp while Cody grabbed a microphone and demanded that he come back and fight him immediately.
Security tried to keep Cody under control, but he wanted GUNTHER released and called for the bell to be rung. GUNTHER had no interest in accepting the challenge and continued walking away. The footage ended with the camera cutting back to Nick Aldis, who was still laid out outside the ring after the attack.
The unseen footage added to the upcoming Saturday Night’s Main Event match. Cody wanted GUNTHER right then and there, but The Ring General chose to leave after doing the damage he came to do.
