Floyd Schofield Jr. congratulated William Zepeda on winning the vacant WBC lightweight title but rejected the idea that the Mexican pressure fighter has become a different boxer. After watching Zepeda defeat Lamont Roach Jr. on Saturday night, Schofield acknowledged a few defensive improvements while insisting the new champion still relies on the same relentless pressure and punch output.

“I think yesterday we seen a little more head slips from him, kind of bouncing on his toes,” Schofield said to MillCity Boxing when discussing Zepeda’s performance. “But if we think about it, he pretty much looks the same, just come forward, and that works for him. That’s what works. If that’s what works for you, hey, keep doing it because he got the world title doing it.”

Asked if Zepeda has taken a significant step forward as a fighter, Schofield dismissed that idea.

“Hell no. It’s just still a basic style. He just comes forward and throws a lot of punches. I just don’t think it was that major of an improvement because a fighter with power, like Tank, myself, anybody who has that one-punch power, they’re going to capitalize on all those shots being thrown.”

Schofield also made it clear he wants a shot at Zepeda once he gets past his own next assignment.

“I’m trying to get this fight on. First I got to handle what I got to handle in October. Then after that, that should be an easy fight to make.”

Schofield is in line to face Lucas Bahdi for the vacant WBA lightweight title if both sides reach terms after the August 11 purse bid. A victory would give him a world title and create one of the division’s biggest possible unification fights. Schofield already believes his punching power and style would give Zepeda a much different test than the one he faced against Roach.
