Triple H says nobody gets handed a main-event spot in WWE. Eric Bischoff agrees with almost all of that—except for one part he says simply doesn’t make sense.

After Triple H argued that wrestlers shouldn’t expect a main-event push simply because it’s “their turn,” Bischoff responded on 83 Weeks and said asking someone to be more popular than Cody Rhodes before taking Cody’s spot is an impossible standard. According to Bischoff, that’s simply not how wrestling works.

“When he says, ‘Oh, you want Cody’s spot. Are you more over than Cody?’ Of course not. Nobody is. Nobody that’s working for that spot currently is more over than the person in that spot because you have to be in that spot to get over.”

The WWE Hall of Famer explained that wrestlers can’t realistically surpass an established top star without first being given comparable opportunities.

“For me to want Cody Rhodes’ spot, according to Paul, I would have to be more over than Cody Rhodes currently in that spot. It’s not realistic. That part of it made me go, ‘Huh?’”

That doesn’t mean Bischoff thinks Triple H was wrong overall. Quite the opposite. He said he actually agrees with the larger point that nobody becomes a star simply because they’ve been around for years or worked hard behind the scenes.

“The rest of it I pretty much agree with because I often would hear guys that were frustrated. They weren’t where they wanted to be and it’s like, ‘You just got to get the push, man. Why is he not giving me a push?’”

Bischoff argued that a push is only one piece of the puzzle. Before WWE gets behind someone, that wrestler has to show they can create momentum on their own.

“It’s not like somebody’s going to look at you and go, ‘That’s the perfect look. I’m going to put the machine behind him and give him a push.’ It doesn’t work that way.”

Instead, Bischoff encouraged talent to constantly bring ideas to the table—not just for themselves, but for everyone around them.

“If you’re out there and you’re finding ways to get yourself over, if you’re coming up with ideas—not for yourself, but for other people—anybody can get themselves over. Come at me with ideas that help your opponent, help the company, sell more merchandise… That’s how you get an opportunity to take that spot.”

His comments came in response to Triple H’s SummerSlam media scrum, where WWE’s Chief Content Officer insisted there are no guaranteed turns at the top of the card and challenged anyone who wants Cody Rhodes’ position to prove they deserve it.

Bischoff agrees that stars have to earn their opportunities. He just doesn’t believe they can become bigger than the people already on top without first being given a real chance to stand beside them.
