Edgar Berlanga believes everything has fallen into place ahead of his Zuffa Boxing debut on Saturday, July 26, at Madison Square Garden in New York. The former super middleweight title challenger described the timing as “storybook,” pointing to the Knicks’ NBA championship and José Alvarado walking him to the ring.
“The Knicks just won the NBA championship after 53 years, and then I’m headlining Madison Square Garden a month after,” said Berlanga to TMS Sports. “It’s like thank you God. This was destined to happen. Alvarado winning the chip. I’m going next month after headlining Madison Square Garden. It all lined up perfectly. Now he’s walking me out. Brooklyn is having a moment.”
The picture outside the interview tells a different story.
Saturday’s main event is a 10-round showcase against Steven Butler, a fringe contender with five defeats who has come up short in his biggest opportunities. Berlanga also enters the fight after losing two of his last three bouts, including a knockout defeat to Hamzah Sheeraz, followed by a year away from the ring.
That leaves little margin for error in his first appearance under the Zuffa banner. An impressive win would give Dana and Zuffa a platform to match Berlanga against recognizable names at 168 or 160 pounds. A poor performance, or an upset loss, would make that job far more difficult.
Ticket demand has also become part of the conversation. The BoxingTickets account on X claimed Zuffa removed roughly half of the remaining inventory for the event before increasing prices on the seats still available, describing the move as “gimmicking the ticket sales.”
Zuffa has not commented publicly on the ticket changes. With the promotion investing heavily in Berlanga as one of its first headline attractions, Saturday’s fight carries importance well beyond the result inside the ring.
