Denver Hume makes an emotional announcement confirming he’s been forced to retire from professional football aged 28.
The left back came through the youth ranks of Sunderland, before breaking into the first team, then departed after 84 appearances and three goals between 2017 and 2022.
He then played 31 times for Portsmouth across two years, before a move to Grimsby in 2024, where he made 64 appearances, scoring once. His last club was Fleetwood, making 9 appearances in the 2025/26 season, out of action since October 2025 having suffered a bleed on the brain during a training session.
Then manager Pete Wild said at the time: “He’s still got a lot to process mentally from the incident. It’s certainly knocked him and us for six because it was so innocuous.”
He wrote via social media: “I never thought I’d be writing this at the age of 28, but following specialist medical advice, my career as a professional footballer has come to an end.
“After suffering a fractured skull and bleed on the brain last season, I’ve spent the months since trying to process this and find a way back to doing what I love the most. Unfortunately that isn’t going to be possible and is something I’ve had to come to terms with.
“It’s difficult to even put into words what football has meant to me. I joined Sunderland at the age of 8 and from that point dedicated my life to football, with one dream – to one day play for the first team. To achieve that dream and go on to make 84 appearances, make my Championship debut and play at Wembley is something I’ll always be incredibly proud of. I’ll always be grateful to everyone at the club who helped make this possible.
“Football has given me some unbelievable memories, representing Sunderland, Portsmouth, Grimsby and Fleetwood along the way. Each club giving me a different experience, sharing dressing rooms with some brilliant people and making real friends for life.
“There have certainly been some difficult periods and a lot of dark days. Injuries, 5 different operations, injections and plenty of moments where I’ve had to pick myself up and go again. But I wouldn’t change my journey as that’s what’s shaped me into the person I am today and given me a different perspective of life. A special mention to Grimsby Town, a club that helped me fall back in love with football again at a time when I really needed it.
“To every coach, staff member, teammate and supporter who’s been part of my journey – thank you.
“And most importantly, to my family, girlfriend and those closest to me. Thank you for every sacrifice, piece of advice, and being there through the highest and lowest moments. I couldn’t have done any of this without you.
“Football has been a huge part of who I am and all I’ve known, but I’m excited to discover what life looks like beyond being a footballer.
“I’m incredibly grateful and proud of the journey I’ve had in the game, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the next chapter brings.
“Thank you ❤️”
Football representation agency General Sports Worldwide wrote: “Everyone at GSW wishes Denver Hume and his family all the very best for the future after he announced his retirement from football on medical advice.
“Denver enjoyed an outstanding playing career during which time he represented Sunderland, Portsmouth, Grimsby and Fleetwood with distinction.
“He was forced to make the difficult decision to step away from the game at the age of 28 after suffering a serious head injury in training last season.
“He’s looking forward to his new career challenge, and we know he will throw himself into that just as wholeheartedly as he did as a player. We look forward to continuing to offer him our support and guidance.”
A statement from his club read: “Fleetwood Town can confirm that Denver Hume has left the Club following a long-term injury which has sadly resulted in his retirement from professional football.
“Everyone at the club would like to thank Denver for his contribution during his time at the Club, congratulate him on a successful playing career and wish him and his family all the very best for the future.”
