It was short and sweet stuff last night in Las Vegas, as Ryan Garcia did, as plenty of us expected, and stopped a too-small Conor Benn. In fact, in getting the TKO over Benn in round two, Garcia won even quicker than most of us felt would be the case. The big talking point that came after the fight involved two other fighters, however.
Sure, there is intrigue surrounding a possible fight between Garcia and Teofimo Lopez, but the fight that was teased, even announced as “done” in the ring, between cruiserweights David Benavidez and Jai Opetaia left we fans pumped up.
Opetaia, unbeaten and scoring a good, one-sided stoppage win over Mikaelian on last night’s card, met Benavidez, also unbeaten, in the ring, and the two showed mutual respect as they exchanged a few words.
“Let’s do it right here next year for Cinco de Mayo,” Benavidez said.
“Done. It’s done.” replied Opetaia, 31-0(24).
All one can say here is, sign us up! This fight, a sure-fight war, a genuine 50-50 collision between two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world right now, has X-rated explosion writ large all over it.
“Respect,” Benavidez, 32-0(26) continued. “He’s a strong fighter, but there can only be one monster. “He likes war, and I’m the exact same way, so it will be one hell of a fight.”
Agreed 100-percent. But who wins this potential modern-day classic? Let’s hope we get to find out.
