“Of course, another dominant victory and, you know, amazing performance. I can’t wait,” Dubois said during the ring announcement. When reminded of the knockdowns in rounds one and three, he replied: “When you get in the water, you’re going to get wet.”

Getting dropped is an expensive version of getting wet. Treating those early rounds as an unavoidable part of the contest risks overlooking openings Wardley can exploit again.

Establishing his jab immediately would allow Dubois to apply pressure while making the challenger work harder to reach him. Walking into punching range without occupying Wardley’s gloves leaves him relying on his chin before his own heavier work has taken effect.

A body attack offers another investment in the later rounds. Wardley needs his legs underneath him to launch explosive attacks and get clear afterward. Making him defend downstairs would also divide his attention, creating opportunities for Dubois to bring the right hand upstairs.

The challenger’s adjustment starts with what happens after he lands something big.

A knockdown creates urgency, but it also gives the hurt fighter a count to recover. Wardley cannot assume Dubois will be as vulnerable when the action resumes as he was when he fell. Measuring the next attack behind a jab, using shorter combinations and leaving enough energy to defend would help him maintain control.

Loading up on every right hand risks spending that advantage. Wide punches give a recovering opponent chances to duck, hold or answer through the middle. Wardley needs accurate follow-up work more than greater effort.

Getting out safely is just as vital. After throwing a lead hook, bringing his glove back and moving his head off the center line would reduce the opening for a straight right counter. Hurting Dubois does not make the return fire harmless.

Wardley cited the changes between his two Frazer Clarke fights and his performances against Justis Huni and Joseph Parker as evidence that he can adapt. That confidence now faces a tougher test: correcting his mistakes against the man who punished them.

There is also only about five months between the fights. That interval alone tells us nothing definite about his recovery, but the punishment from an eleven-round stoppage adds weight to the need for better defense.

Dubois has proved he can survive a dangerous start. Wardley needs a plan that still works when the early knockout doesn’t come.
