Conor Benn showed a weight of 157.8 pounds on Friday, leaving him 10.8 pounds above the welterweight limit with 21 days remaining until he must make 147 for his fight with WBC champion Ryan Garcia.

Making the limit should not be the central concern. Benn has three weeks to remove the weight, and his team will have a schedule for bringing him down. The larger question is what condition he will be in after the cut. The video shows a lean and muscular Benn. He does not have an obvious amount of body fat to shed, so a portion of those 10.8 pounds may eventually have to come through reduced food, depleted glycogen stores and dehydration.

Putting weight back on after the weigh-in will make Benn heavier by the time he enters the ring. It does not mean his system will regain everything taken from it. Fluids can be restored, but the effects of a hard cut may remain in his legs, stamina, reactions and punch resistance.

That distinction is important against Garcia. Benn may need to pressure the champion and maintain a high work rate through the second half of the fight. Those are difficult tasks for a boxer forced down to a division that he has outgrown.

Although Garcia is also a large welterweight, he has competed closer to 147 pounds and may not be asked to move the same amount of weight during the final weeks. If he reaches the official weigh-in in better physical shape, Benn’s natural strength advantage may be reduced before the fight begins.

The 157.8-pound reading does not prove that Benn will be drained. With 21 days available, he has time to lose much of it gradually. Still, his readiness deserves attention when he steps on the official scale. Reaching the contracted weight and restoring several pounds overnight should be possible. The real test comes the following evening, when Benn must perform for 12 rounds after being taken down to 147.

The fight takes place on September 12 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It will stream on Paramount+ in the United States and DAZN in the United Kingdom and Ireland. An official start time has not been announced.
