“PBs to start the weekend off. 2 weeks out! 👹.” Benn shared the training footage on X.
He needs every physical advantage he can find. Benn has gone more than four years since his last stoppage, and his results against durable opposition have exposed the difference between his reputation and his actual punching power.
Benn’s Knockout Reputation Has Expired
Benn built his reputation by quickly removing fading names selected for his aggressive style. Samuel Vargas, Chris Algieri and Chris van Heerden were all stopped early as Benn rushed them before they could settle into the fight.
The knockouts ended once opponents survived the opening attack. Rodolfo Orozco, Peter Dobson, Chris Eubank Jr. and Regis Prograis took Benn’s hardest shots and stayed upright. He remained busy, but lacked the punch placement and technical variety needed to break them apart after his first rush failed.
The timing invites questions. Benn’s most explosive run ended with his two adverse drug testing findings in 2022. Since returning, he has fought five times and failed to record a knockdown, much less a knockout. That sequence does not prove what produced his earlier power, but it leaves an uncomfortable question hanging over the version of Benn now lifting enormous weights for social media. Inside the ring, the early power punches have been replaced by volume.
Ryan’s Left Hook Punishes Benn’s Pressure
Heavy deadlifts may help Benn preserve strength during the final stage of his weight cut. They cannot shorten his punches or protect him from the counter coming when he attacks. Conor often rushes forward behind wide hooks, leaving openings as he tries to overwhelm opponents. Ryan wants fighters stepping toward him because it gives him room to plant and fire the check left hook over their right hand. That aggression may deliver Benn directly into Ryan’s best punch.
Hand speed creates another difficulty. Garcia throws the straighter, quicker shots, while Benn loads up and exposes his intentions. Added muscle will mean little if Garcia lands first during the exchanges.
There is also Benn’s return to 147 after four years at higher weights. He already looked drained while preparing to face Prograis at 150 pounds. Taking off another three pounds may leave him weaker rather than stronger, regardless of what he lifts in the gym.
If Benn cannot hurt Garcia, he must apply pressure while avoiding the champion’s counter. That requires patience and defensive control he rarely displays when chasing a finish.
