WWE‘s Cody Rhodes explains how he uses a popular episode theme from Parks and Recreation to teach his students about pro wrestling.

Former Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes made a surprise appearance on Good Hang with Amy Poehler. During the conversation, he explained how he uses the episode “Bowling for Votes” (Season four, episode 13) to teach his students at his wrestling school.

In the episode, Leslie Knope (Poehler) hosts a focus group for her city council campaign. Despite overwhelmingly positive feedback, one guy says he won’t vote for her because she doesn’t look like someone he would go bowling with. Leslie has her campaign hold a bowling night, completely obsessed with winning over that single hater, ignoring everyone else who already supports her.

Cody Rhodes noted that he uses the storyline to train prospective wrestlers on navigating social media. He cautions them against fixating on a single negative comment among the many positive ones, advising them to focus instead on the fans who have their back.

Cody Rhodes explained how he uses the episode to teach his students

“I have to share this with you. You might have heard this already, but where I teach wrestling, we use Bowling for Votes as part of the curriculum. I always ask, has anyone ever seen the show? Because I was a big fan of the show, but I always ask if they have, and then they have to go home and watch that night,” Rhodes began.

“It’s a way for young prospective wrestlers to understand that social media, if you scroll through 300 positive things, but then you find that one guy who thought you were fat, there’s no point. Go with everybody else. Go with the people who already had your back. But we use that episode. It’s brought up every camp, and most people know it, too. So, it’s actually a lot of fun,” Rhodes continued.

Amy Poehler replied, “Oh my god, that’s so nice to hear. I would never think to ask if anything from Parks is used in any kind of curriculum. But you’re right. I bet you have young people who are trying to figure out how to participate in feedback, which is really hard, especially for a young person to not let that feel too personal.”

Cody Rhodes then said, “Well, particularly wrestling is brutal. I feel like every funnel is one thing, but I feel like wrestling and Star Wars are the most divisive social I’ve ever seen. You can’t just say you like a thing. Like a thing means you dislike something else, and it means war.”
