Cody Rhodes may have taken another step toward a heel turn following his chaotic match with Randy Orton at WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event on Sept. 6. While Orton walked away with the win, it was Rhodes’ actions during the fight that left fans wondering whether The American Nightmare is slowly losing his way.
The rivalry has been building since Orton helped ensure CM Punk remained WWE Champion at SummerSlam by preventing Rhodes from reclaiming the title. Their feud had largely remained verbal because physical contact would have cost them their opportunity to challenge for the championship, but that agreement went out the window at SNME.
Rhodes’ family watched from ringside, with his wife even throwing a drink at Orton during the confrontation. The match then spilled throughout the arena, featured multiple referee bumps, and eventually left Orton bleeding after he was sent into the steel steps.

With Randy Orton hurt and vulnerable, Rhodes appeared ready to cross a line. He moved toward hitting the Punt Kick, but stopped when Orton pleaded with him not to do it.
That hesitation proved costly. After another referee entered the ring, Orton hit a low blow that caught both Rhodes and the official. The Viper followed with an RKO, and referee Charles Robinson recovered in time to make the three-count official.
Rhodes stopping himself from delivering the Punt may suggest that his moral line hasn’t disappeared completely. However, fans on X are already debating whether WWE is preparing to push him beyond it.

Meanwhile, @IBHQ_ wrote, “I can 100% seeing Cody finally going to that darker side,” adding that Orton’s actions could push Rhodes too far.
For now, a heel turn remains speculation. But after SNME, the line between The American Nightmare and the dark side looks a little less clear.
