CM Punk has been popping up just about everywhere lately, and apparently there’s a pretty simple reason he keeps taking these little “side quests.” It also involves a shot at Roman Reigns for not exactly having the busiest work schedule in WWE.
Speaking during the WWE Crown Jewel Countdown show, Punk explained why he recently headed down to NXT and has been working outside his usual schedule. According to Punk, he isn’t interested in sitting around waiting for Reigns to show up.
“I’m not holding my breath waiting for Roman to show up to work because he’s allergic to that.”
Instead, Punk said he’s been deliberately looking for other goals to chase. That’s why fans have seen him head to NXT, work AAA shows and generally take on more matches whenever the opportunity presents itself.
“I chase other goals. That’s why you see me chasing other goals. I’ve been going on side quests. I’ve been going down to NXT to find goals and things I can conquer, and people to challenge me. I’m working AAA shows, and I’m beginning to work as much as I can because it keeps me sharp and on the edge.”
One of those side quests brought Punk back to an NXT ring on November 4 for the first time in more than 16 years. He challenged Grayson Waller for the NXT Championship after Waller’s controversial Halloween Havoc victory over Tony D’Angelo.
Punk came pretty damn close to adding another championship to his résumé too. He was preparing to hit Waller with the GTS when Kevin Owens suddenly showed up and distracted him, allowing Waller to steal the victory with a rollup.
That loss clearly hasn’t changed Punk’s approach. He’s treating appearances in places like NXT and AAA as chances to find something new to conquer while also keeping himself sharp, rather than simply waiting around for whatever comes next on the main roster.
