Chelsea need to sell defenders before their interest in Maxence Lacroix gets really serious, according to one insider.

A couple of weeks ago Chelsea’s interest in Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix was the main headline all over the place – and a deal felt like it was close. Since then, there’s been pretty much total silence on that front, so our writer Simon Phillips brought an update from his end on his Substack for those curious about what’s going on.

He confirms that new manager Xabi Alonso is “convinced” by the player and has given the green light to the deal. Palace are asking for £60m, while Chelsea want to offer closer to £40m. £50m would seem an easy compromise, and one Chelsea would happily pay.

According to Phillips, it’s all about the sales at Chelsea. They’ve got to sell some of their defenders before they commit the £60m or so that Palace want.

The first to go could be Trevoh Chalobah, who has interest from Inter Milan and Como which is getting pretty serious. Once a deal is agreed with one of them, Chelsea can put an offer on the table for Lacroix. So while things have been slow so far, two deals could happen pretty quickly one after the other.

    In other news…

Chelsea are interested in Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace – but would need something big to happen for that to become a big option for them.

Alex Scott is another midfielder Chelsea are apparently pushing to sign according to Phillips.
