Chelsea’s signing of Danny Welbeck makes sense, but it did surprise people at the time. The Mail have the inside story.

Chelsea’s signing of Danny Welbeck this summer surprised most people in football, but we’ve not yet really heard the inside story on how it went down. Kieran Gill’s piece for the Daily Mail today goes into more detail on the thinking behind it and how it came to be.

He pointed out that Chelsea sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell were both at Brighton when Welbeck signed there – so they know him well. Then it was just a case of the right opportunity coming up.

“Chelsea had heard the 35-year-old might be leaving Brighton this summer,” Gill writes.

“It is believed Welbeck already had up to four offers for his consideration. It was thought he could be a good addition and so the idea was put to [Xabi] Alonso, who agreed, having played against Welbeck more than once in his career.”

We’d love to know who those four clubs were – we’d imagine some were Championship promotion chasers, and it will have been a real stunner for the former Man U man to get a call from a Chelsea team who are hoping to compete for the Champions League places this season.

    In other news…

Joao Pedro has signed a new Chelsea contract – but there’s some confusion about the terms.

Atletico Madrid have been linked to Nicolas Jackson, and are apparently preparing to make a bid for him sooner rather than later.
