Charlotte Flair doesn’t understand why the Divas Championship still gets so much hate, and she called out people who still hate on the title and the Divas era.

While speaking to Ring the Belle, Flair looked back on being the final holder of the Divas Championship and explained why the title meant more to her than some fans may realize. The interviewer brought up Charlotte’s “girly pop era” and asked what the controversial butterfly title meant to her.

Charlotte responded by saying the Divas Championship felt different from other titles she has held. According to Flair, it was the one championship that felt like it owned her more than she owned it, but she was still proud to carry it because it represented both glamour and athleticism.

“No, I hear you say that, and I’ve heard that before, but for me it was like the one title that I felt like owned me and that I didn’t own. But I was also, as an athlete, so proud to hold that title—to hold the Divas Championship and feel like a diva, when at my core I was an athlete, and realizing that you could be both at the same time.”

Flair also pointed out that retiring the title was an important part of her career. She said ending Nikki Bella’s record-setting Divas Championship reign and closing that era helped shape where she ended up in WWE.

“And then when I retired it, I took a lot of pride because you have to look at the women before me. And had I not retired the Divas Championship and ended Nikki Bella’s longest-reigning Divas Championship reign, it was like—where would I be today?”

Charlotte Flair made it clear she never fully understood why the title was so controversial. To her, the butterfly design did not make the championship weak or less meaningful, stating that she was still a badass.

“So it was all part of the history, but there was never for a second that I didn’t—I never understood the controversy in it. Like, just because it had a butterfly? Well, I’m still a badass, and I wear butterflies all the time.”

Flair then explained that women should not have to choose between being feminine and being powerful. In her view, the Divas Championship represented that balance, makin it clear that’s what made it special.

“Yeah, be strong. Yeah, that doesn’t mean anything. I think it’s the duality—having the feminine energy and being a badass at the same time. That’s what makes women so special—is that we can do it all.”

The Divas Championship has long been debated by fans because of what it represented during WWE’s previous women’s era. However, Charlotte clearly sees it as part of her history and part of the larger story of women’s wrestling evolving in WWE.

For Charlotte Flair, the butterfly title was never something to be ashamed of. It was a symbol of an era, a stepping stone in her career, and proof that a woman can be glamorous, powerful, and dangerous in the ring all at once.
