Cassius Clay successfully defended the WBC, NYSAC, and The Ring heavyweight titles by knocking out British challenger Brian London in the third round before approximately 13,000 fans at Earls Court Arena in London, England, on August 6, 1966. Although he had adopted the name Muhammad Ali two years earlier following his conversion to Islam, Clay was still billed and widely identified under his former name at the time.
The scheduled 15-round championship bout was Clay’s fifth defense since winning the heavyweight crown from Sonny Liston in February 1964. He entered with a perfect 24-0 record, installed as roughly a 15-1 favorite over London, the former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion known by the moniker “The Blackpool Rock.”
London gave away advantages in height, reach, and speed, leaving him with few answers after the opening bell. Using a sharp jab, quick footwork, and rapid-fire combinations, the champion controlled the action and repeatedly beat London to the punch. The challenger generated almost no offense. Many accounts credited him with only a single solid left jab in the opening round that briefly caught Clay’s attention.
The finish came at 1:40 of the third round. Clay trapped London in a neutral corner, unleashing a blistering combination described by observers as roughly a dozen punches within a few seconds. A left-right combination sent London to the canvas, where referee Harry Gibbs completed the count.
Clay weighed 209½ pounds, while London came in at 201½ pounds. The champion received a guaranteed purse of approximately $252,000 plus a share of the television revenue. London earned about $112,000 for the brief outing.
Earls Court fell well short of full capacity. Many fight fans dismissed the matchup as a mismatch, and Clay quickly justified those expectations by displaying the hand speed, reflexes, and accuracy that defined his prime.
Clay’s knockout of London set up a meeting with Karl Mildenberger later that year. The event became the final bout under Clay’s agreement with the Louisville Sponsoring Group before Herbert Muhammad assumed management duties.
London remained remarkably candid about the experience throughout his life. He openly admitted Clay held every advantage, describing himself as smaller, slower, and lacking the champion’s athleticism. He frequently joked about accepting a rematch only if Clay entered the ring wearing heavy weights around his ankles. While certain British critics questioned London’s effort, his honesty about facing one of boxing’s greatest champions became an enduring part of the event’s history.
