Xabi Alonso did his first press conference as Chelsea manager yesterday, covering some interesting and important topics as preseason gets underway.
But that wasn’t all the media duties done – he also had a chat with Sky Sports, the quotes from which have come out today. In there he spoke at length about a player he won’t get a chance to work with for a few weeks – club captain Reece James, who is going to be with England for the rest of this week and then will have a well deserved holiday.
Alonso excited to work with exceptional James
“He can do everything,” said Alonso of James in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News.
“He can attack from inside or outside. He can deliver, he’s good at set-pieces, he has Blue DNA, which is very important, and we transmit that to the whole team and new players. He’s going to be the captain.”
James is touch and go to start tomorrow’s semi final against Argentina as he battles a hamstring issue. Alonso will be watching with his heart in his mouth.
