Andy Cruz returns to the ring Saturday night with more on the line than simply getting back into the win column.

The former Olympic gold medalist faces veteran Abraham Montoya in the co-feature on the Diego Pacheco-Immanuwel Aleem card at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. On paper, the 2020 Olympic gold medalist Cruz is expected to win comfortably. What matters is how he wins after suffering the first defeat of his professional career against Raymond Muratalla in January.

The loss changed the conversation around Cruz. For years, his amateur pedigree created the belief that he would move through the professional ranks with little resistance. Muratalla exposed areas Cruz must improve, particularly when opponents force him to fight at a pace he doesn’t control. Instead of dictating range and rhythm, Cruz spent too much of that fight backing up and reacting.

Montoya (24-7-1, 14 KOs) isn’t the same caliber of fighter as Muratalla, but he presents another pressure style that should provide clues about whether Cruz (6-1, 3 KOs) has made adjustments. The Mexican veteran has built a reputation on durability and constant aggression, making him the type of opponent who won’t disappear after a few clean combinations.

A routine decision victory may not be enough to quiet the questions surrounding Cruz. The unbeaten aura that followed him from the amateur ranks disappeared with the Muratalla defeat. Now, performances matter as much as results.

Cruz remains one of boxing’s most technically gifted fighters, and at 30 years old, there is still time to make another run toward a world title. Saturday offers an opportunity to remind people why he was viewed as one of the sport’s premier amateur talents.

If he controls the fight, handles Montoya’s pressure and looks more comfortable than he did against Muratalla, the conversation quickly shifts back toward title contention. If the same problems resurface, the doubts about Cruz’s ceiling as a professional will only grow.
