Errol Spence Jr recently called time on his illustrious professional career and now Andre Ward has revealed if he believes ‘The Truth’ is deserving of a place in the Hall of Fame.
Spence was widely regarded as one of the best 147lb fighters on the planet for a number of years, dating back to when he first became IBF welterweight champion with a knockout win over Kell Brook in 2017.
Successful defences against the likes of Mikey Garcia and Lamont Peterson followed, before he went on to unify the division and add the WBC and WBA titles with respective victories over Shawn Porter and Yordenis Ugas.
It led to an undisputed showdown with Terence Crawford in July 2023, but despite being seen as a 50-50 bout heading in, Crawford easily dominated the action as he earned a ninth round TKO win to hand Spence the first loss of his career.
A long period of inactivity then followed, before Spence finally returned to action last weekend after three years out when he went up against Tim Tszyu in a middleweight bout.
While he may have given a good account of himself, it wasn’t to be for Spence, as he suffered the unanimous decision loss and then announced he would be hanging up the gloves and walking away from the sport.
Some fans have now began to debate whether ‘The Truth’ should be inducted into the Hall of Fame, and one man who knows how it feels to earn that accolade is two-weight world champion Ward, who received his place back in 2021.
Speaking to Premier Boxing Champions, Ward revealed that he thinks Spence has done enough to earn his inclusion.
“I believe he should be a Hall of Famer. He had a great career. He’s one of the last of a dying breed that will get down with anybody.”
Spence will have to wait three years from his retirement until he becomes eligible for induction, where it will became clear whether others in the boxing world agree with Ward’s view.
