Xabi Alonso gives little away in his press conferences, and that can be a little frustrating given we want to see Moises Caicedo ASAP.

We’re getting into the swing of the season, and that means we’re also getting adjusted to Xabi Alonso’s press conferences.

His style is to be friendly, but pretty closed. The best example is with Moises Caicedo’s injury. He’s not shutting down questions – but he’s giving away as little as possible.

That doesn’t stop fans and journalists wanting to know what’s going on with their midfielder, however. The answer from today’s presser ahead of the game against Leeds tomorrow night was another masterclass is saying something without saying much at all.

It’s assumed that the Ecuador star is out for tomorrow’s game. So the question put to Alonso was – will he be ready for the Hull game on Saturday?

“Potentially, yes, but we will have to wait,” Alonso answered.

“Thursday or Friday we will know more.”

It’s very similar to the answer he gave a week ago – and in fact to every injury response he’s had. Even if he was 90% sure that Caicedo was going to be ready to play, we think he’d say something similar. As it is, we have our doubts that we’ll see Caicedo this week. The new manager has already admitted that the midfielder’s return against Brighton was rushed, and it meant he aggravated his issue.

We’d imagine they will now be extra cautious. There are ten days until Brentford – that seems a more reasonable target.

    In other news…

Valentin Barco has a major role to play tomorrow in the game against Leeds. He needs to prove to Xabi Alonso that he can be trusted in physical games.

Reece James has called for patience after Chelsea were beaten by Arsenal once again. The Blues are only just starting their project under Xabi Alonso.
