UFC Freedom 250 went down on the White House lawn without the crowd seeing anything go off the rails, but federal officials now say one major arrest happened before the event ever got underway.
According to Fox News, Mexican national Abraham Hermosillo Alvarez was arrested by the FBI in Omaha on the day of UFC Freedom 250. ICE later lodged a detainer against him, and DHS is now identifying Alvarez as the alleged ringleader behind the failed attack plot targeting the White House event.
That means while fans were focused on the fights, federal agents were already moving on a suspect officials say was at the center of something much darker.
Fox News stated that DHS said Alvarez came to the United States as a child and was granted deportation relief through DACA in 2014 after failing to leave the country when his B2 visa expired in 2001. Officials said Alvarez will face justice before being deported from the United States.
The alleged plot was aimed at UFC Freedom 250, which took place Sunday, June 14, on the White House lawn. Authorities previously said the plan involved multiple phases, including explosive-loaded drones, panic near the event area, and additional attackers targeting the White House gate.
The FBI learned about the alleged plot on June 10 and acted before the event could be hit. Arrests were made in Cincinnati, and investigators later found at least 23 users on Signal discussing parts of the alleged attack after searching a suspect’s iPhone.
FBI Director Kash Patel praised the fast response by federal officials and law enforcement partners, saying the alleged plan was stopped before it could turn into a disaster.
“Thanks to the rapid action of this FBI, our partners, and the Department of Justice in a multi-state operation, multiple individuals are now in custody and allegedly planned attacks were stopped cold.”
The biggest update now is Alvarez’s arrest. DHS is not just tying him to the case, but calling him the alleged ringleader of the failed plot. That puts his arrest at the center of the investigation as federal officials continue sorting through who was involved and how far the plan really went.
UFC Freedom 250 still happened without incident, but this arrest shows how close officials believe the event came to a serious security threat. All suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court, but DHS and the FBI are making it clear they believe this was a major plot stopped before it reached the White House lawn.
In the end, UFC Freedom 250 will be remembered for more than the fights. Federal officials say the FBI arrested the alleged ringleader before the event could be disrupted, turning what fans saw as a smooth White House spectacle into a much bigger story behind the scenes.
