Alessio Dionisi says sorry and calls of unity after Watford lose 5-1 to Peterborough in the Second Round of the Carabao Cup.

James Clarridge turned in an own goal, Harry Leonard scored twice, while Bolu Shofowoke and Harrison Jones got one each. Mamadou Doumbia could only get a consolation for the Hornets.

Alessio Dionisi put out a young Watford side, giving four defenders their debuts, and making 11 changes to the side who played out a draw against Wrexham at the weekend.

    FAN VLOG:

The average age of our team tonight was younger 👀I believe. Oh and 5 of our academy players played in that win. Just saying 💙 https://t.co/vnbbBOEWy8

4-0 DOWN AND THIS IS BECAUSE POZZO AND DUXBURY CANNOT PULL THEIR FINGERS OUT THEIR ARSES. Gutted for the academy lads who’ve been thrown into this #watfordfc pic.twitter.com/8aXph5p1qf

Alessio Dionisi said, as per the club website: “It was important that we used today to prepare for the next match against West Ham.

“We did not play well, but it was an opportunity for six academy players.

“For me, these players played at their maximum.”

Dionisi with a message to supporters: “Let’s stay together. In this moment we are not ready for two competitions. It’s clear.

“We are sorry for the supporters for this result, but tomorrow we will not think about it any more.”

He added: “Payero arrived late, Kayembe arrived after the World Cup, Zemura arrived late, and it is important to prepare for the Championship.

“We are not happy about today, but that is normal when we play with six young players.

“Before the match we wanted to win, but football is like this.”

Looking ahead to the next game: “We have a good mentality which is good for our future.

“If we work all together, we believe positive results will arrive.”

Dionisi: sorry for supporters but wasn’t another possibility. Result terrible but Championship more important. Can’t play 2 comps at moment. Impossible to play every 3 games with same team. Young players aren’t ready. Need new players to complete team.@BBCSport3CR #WatfordFC pic.twitter.com/8leuNqojnF

Peterborough’s Luke Williams told the club’s media: “So pleased with them, how hard they worked and how much threat they posed going forward. They stood up to the quality of the opposite, it was everything really.

Interviewer: “When you’re in the dugout, when they have a performance like that, and for all of the players out there, you must sit there very proud because not many teams will come to a place like this and score five goals, regardless of the team they put out.”

Luke: “The incredible feeling of pride. Pride in front of me, the pitch, pride behind me, the way the guys were, the way they’ve been the whole summer. Yeah, a huge sense of pride there.

“And I think the players that have just joined us, I hope that they feel like they’ve been looked after by a group of players that have really worked very hard over the summer and they look like very much part of the team already. think that’s fair to say.”

Check out more of his interview below…

Troy Deeney: “By the time the window closes, if this is the squad that is constructed, it’s going to be a long season.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Alessio Dionisi says sorry and calls of unity after Watford lose 5-1 to Peterborough…

@wfcgeorge_: Well that’s a statement in itself, all up to you now, Gino 🤷‍♂️

@HJClarke95: Let’s not ignore his words of desperate need of reinforcements with experience that isn’t quoted here…

@duzza007: Feel so sorry for him, finally stumbled upon what seems like a decent HC that is trying to give us a identity, seems to have connected to the fans, only for the idiots at the top of the club to not back this manager. It’s a disgrace, get them gone @WatfordFC #PozzoOut #DuxburyOut

@wickesy21: What a club we have become. Simply left out his quotes about the need for players. Time for you to sell up Gino.

@Paulfleming__: Face the music Duxbury yet again you made countless promises this summer and you have failed AGAIN #PozzoOut

@lee_harris6: Had my reservations about him and I still think he’ll become another lamb to the slaughter, however he’s been a complete breath of fresh air. Honest, open, no sugarcoating, no bs. Tactically he’s got very little wrong. This is the manager you invest 2/3/4 years into but we won’t.

@out_pozzo: Top bloke, good manager. One they’ve been fortunate to stumble on after the (majority) shite we’ve had in charge last few years – and yet he won’t be here long. Really feel for him. Get behind him and the boys again this Saturday. #watfordfc

@WatfordPod: A man, one suspects, who is quickly realising that ‘promise’ has a different definition at #WatfordFC…

@thewatfordway: Damning quotes from Dionisi. Back this manager, @WatfordFC.

@HQMilky: Really like the guy he had his hands tied, feel sorry for him and hope he sticks around 🙌 I wouldn’t blame him for walking if they get no one in to support him.
