Linda McMahon is facing impeachment efforts from a House Democrat over McMahon’s dismantling and downsizing of the Department of Education.
This week, Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Ore., introduced articles of impeachment against McMahon, who currently serves as the Education Secretary. The move comes as Democrats have mounted criticism against McMahon over what they call an effort to essentially abolish the Department of Education.
Speaking on the House Floor on Thursday (via ABC News), Bonamici said that McMahon had lied to Congress, and made “illegal transfers” from the Department of Education’s functions to other partner agencies. “It’s completely out of bounds,” Bonamici told ABC News. “You can’t just unilaterally move a program that Congress put at the Department of Education and put it somewhere else.”
The impeachment articles also claim McMahon has shown “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law.” In a reply to the efforts on X, McMahon told the Democrats in Congress to “do better,” and cited several issues that she believes she is trying to fix within the Department of Education.
The impeachment list currently has a growing list of co-sponsors from Democrats in Congress. Since they’re in the minority, however, the odds of impeaching McMahon appear to be relatively slim. They would not only have to get the vote into the House of Representatives, but would then need two-thirds of the Republican-controlled Senate to convict.
Republican Education Committee Chairman Tim Walberg criticized the efforts, saying that McMahon is doing what people elected her and President Donald Trump to do.
“Secretary McMahon is doing exactly what voters elected President Trump to do: rein in a bloated bureaucracy and put students, parents, and taxpayers first,” Walberg said in a statement to ABC News. “Disagreeing with that agenda does not make it impeachable.”
