Adelaida Ruiz hoping to fight smarter in Ginny Fuchs rematch, still expects a war

Adelaida “La Cobra” Ruiz is predicting all-out war when she faces Virginia “Ginny” Fuchs in a 10-round rematch, on Saturday, July 18, live on ProBoxTV (7:00 pm EST/4:00 pm PST) from the NOS Events Center  in San Bernardino, California.

WBC junior bantamweight champion Ruiz, 18-1-1 (8 KOs), of Los Angeles and WBC interim titlist Fuchs, 4-0 (1 KO), of Houston will meet to determine the true WBC 115-pound world champion in a women’s special attraction. The card is headlined by WBC No. 12-ranked Bryan “Nino Maravilla” Flores, 28-1-1 (16 KOs), facing Jonathan “Thunder” Navarro, 18-2 (9 KOs), in the 10-round super lightweight main event.

In the 10-round super welterweight co-feature, Joshua Kevin Anton, 13-0 (12 KOs), takes on Vladimir Hernandez, 17-7 (7 KOs).

Ruiz and Fuchs met for the first time in August 2024, with Fuchs winning a highly entertaining split decision to wrest the WBC interim junior bantamweight title from Ruiz. Fuchs, however, suffered severe thumb injury during the fight and, because of a lengthy rehabilitation and then a series of setbacks, hasn’t fought since. In November 2025, the WBC allowed Ruiz to fight for the full championship against Canada’s Alexas Kubicki with the stipulation the winner face Fuchs.

Ruiz defeated Kubicki by unanimous decision, putting her on a collision course for this rematch with Fuchs.

“I feel pretty strong and confident,” said Ruiz during a break in training. “I’ve been really challenging myself to do new things I haven’t done in the past… I’m a brawler. I like to brawl – so I’m working more on boxing, working inside and outside the pocket. I’ve also got some new sparring partners to improve my skills.”

Ruiz says she’ll need to show more ring generalship in this fight if she is to change the outcome from the first matchup.

“She’s a pretty good fighter, very technical,” said Ruiz of Fuchs. “She has a lot of experience. Maybe she doesn’t have as many pro fights, but she definitely has experience. I only had 39 amateur fights. Ginny competed in national and international tournaments and the Olympics (former amateur standout Fuchs competed in the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics).

Born competitive, Ruiz says losing their first fight was a heavy blow.

“Losing was horrible… every loss I’ve taken, even in my amateur career, has been really hard on me. I’m a crybaby, so I take it very personally. I’ve always been that way. I’m in a different state of mind now from our first fight though. I’m putting more into my piggy bank; different things, quarters, nickels, dollar bills, like, it’s packed this time, versus before.”

In her only other career rematch, Ruiz fared better in the second fight. She fought to a draw with Sonia Osorio for the interim WBC super flyweight title in March 2021 but took a unanimous decision from Osorio in the rematch in September of the following year to become interim belt holder.

“I love challenges. Anything that challenges me is just, I love it. So, like I said, this camp has been very challenging for me. I’m learning, and I love it.”

Despite her desire to be more technical, Ruiz let it slip that she is planning on doing things her customary way during the fight as well.

“I think it will be a war,” she said. “I don’t think we’re gonna have any time to even think. I think we both want the same thing. We both want to win. We’re both competitive. So, it’s just gonna be war. It’s gonna be punches flying everywhere.”

In the 10-round welterweight chief supporting bout, Ruben “El Pollito” Aguillar (24-0-1, 21 KOs) of Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, takes on Tre’Sean “Trigger” Wiggins (17-5-4, 10 KOs) of Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Future Stars action to begin the evening features, Anthony “2 Quick” Cuba (12-1-2, 5 KOs) of Los Angeles battling Misael ‘Pichon’ Cabrera (18-3-1, 12 KOs) of Sonora, Mexico, in a super lightweight eight-rounder; and Charles “LOLO” Harris (12-1, 7 KOs) of Rialto, California, returning to action in another eight-round super lightweight bout against Jason “El Gallo” Limon (11-2-1, 2 KOs) of San Antonio.

Also in action will be lightweight Amador Mendez, 7-0 (4 KOs), of Austin, Texas, taking on William King, 6-4-2 (3 KOs) of Lynwood, California, over six, and a six-round super welterweight battle between KJ Wailele, 4-0 (2 KOs), of Hawaii and Juan Carlos Campos Medina, 4-3 (3 KOs), of Mexico.

Tickets for this event, presented by Garry Jonas (Pro Box Promotions) and Robert Garcia, are available through thundertix.com.
