Tyson Fury u-turns on making fight against fellow British heavyweight

Tyson Fury is well and truly back in the heavyweight division, with ‘The Gypsy King’ hopeful of securing some major fights and potentially becoming boxing’s fifth three-time heavyweight world champion.

Fury first claimed world honours when he dethroned Wladimir Klitschko back in 2015, but a hiatus from the sport led to his being stripped of the unified crown, requiring a remarkable rebuild upon his return.

In one of modern boxing’s most significant comebacks, Fury returned to the peak of the division through an incredible rivalry with America’s Deontay Wilder, where a knockout victory in their rematch secured him the WBC world title. He would produce the same result in the trilogy bout.

In 2024, Fury lost that title to Oleksandr Usyk, but the two-time ruler has revealed his plans to mount another charge towards world honours in the hope of a third reign in the division. Usyk holds three of the four major belts, and Daniel Dubois holds the other.

Speaking with FurociTV last month, Fury had ruled out a showdown with the newly crowned WBO world champion.

“It’s like League One against Champions League Football. Although they had a good fight together, we’ve seen what happens when Dubois steps up into the Premiership.”

“They don’t really do anything for me. They’re not big fights. My big fights are Tyson Fury vs whoever he wants and Tyson Fury vs Usyk or Joshua, they’re not Wardley or Dubois.

“I’m not going to go off track and fight Dubois in a tough fight for 10 times less money.”

Now, just weeks later, Fury has u-turned on that fight, telling iFL TV that Dubois did a ‘beautiful job’ when he halted Fabio Wardley to become world champion and that he would indeed be willing to fight him.

“Dubois? Yeah, of course [I would fight him]. I will fight anybody, I don’t give a s**t who I fight. I thought that Dubois did a beautiful job in his last fight against Wardley, it was an unbelievable fight by the way.”

Fury also said that he would be willing to face young Moses Itauma, though only for mega money, after previously saying the fight did nothing for him.

Dubois and Wardley are expected to rematch the end of the year, meaning Fury would likely have to wait until 2027 to challenge for the WBO heavyweight world title if it is indeed a goal.
