John Fury believes boxing is on the verge of a major shake-up, and he thinks Dana White could be the man leading it.
While discussing a range of topics following Tommy Fury’s victory in Manchester on Saturday night, the Fury family patriarch threw his support behind White’s growing involvement in the sport. White has become an increasingly prominent figure in boxing after launching Zuffa Boxing alongside Turki Alalshikh, with plans for a new promotion aimed at changing the traditional structure of the sport.
Asked for his thoughts on White’s venture, John Fury suggested established promoters should embrace the competition rather than resist it.
“I think he’s doing really well, mate. I really do,” Fury said during a media scrum. “He’s a new kid on the block. He’s bringing different things to the game. I think it’s a takeover. I think he’s going to put the rest of them out of business. They’ve all had their day in the sun. Let the man through.”
Fury went a step further when asked if White would be the right figure to handle a potential Tyson Fury versus Anthony Joshua showdown.
“Yeah, I really do,” Fury said. “The man knows his job, you know, and at the end of the day, he’s a new kid on the block and new people people are interested in. People get bored with people sooner, be bored with all of us. So, what you do is make room for other people coming through.
“Step aside and let them do the job. I think Dana White’s fabulous. Give him a chance.”
Working alongside Alalshikh, the UFC president has promised a streamlined model focused on the best fighting the best, while criticizing some of boxing’s longstanding practices.
White has repeatedly said that he wants Zuffa Boxing to deliver the biggest fights on a more consistent basis. John Fury’s comments make him one of the latest figures in boxing to publicly endorse White’s approach.
