Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports recently revisited the 2023 NFL Draft and made a significant change to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ first-round selection.
In Wilson’s re-draft, the Buccaneers select Kobie Turner with the 19th overall pick instead of their original choice, Calijah Kancey.
Turner has emerged as one of the biggest success stories from the 2023 draft class after being selected in the third round by the Los Angeles Rams. Wilson noted that Turner was not invited to the NFL Combine, despite eventually becoming one of the most productive players from his draft class, underscoring that pre-draft evaluations do not always tell the full story.
The selection also highlights just how impressive the Rams’ 2023 draft class has become in hindsight. According to Wilson’s re-draft, Los Angeles produced four players who would now be selected in the first round, despite none of them originally hearing their names called on Day 1.
For Tampa Bay, the re-draft is less an indictment of Kancey and more a reflection of how well Turner has developed at the NFL level. Kancey has shown flashes of the disruptive interior pass-rushing ability that made him a first-round selection, but injuries have prevented him from consistently building momentum throughout his first few professional seasons.
Re-drafts are always an exercise in hindsight, but they do offer an interesting look at how perceptions change once players have several years of NFL tape on their resumes. In this case, Wilson believes Turner has done enough to move all the way into the first round, including a spot that originally belonged to the Buccaneers.
