Shrewsbury Town fan groups express concerns in a letter to the chairman Roland Wycherley and the board of directors.

Seven groups have come together to speak out on the ‘current state’ of the football club, raising questions on the ongoing takeover process with it all gone quiet.

Chris H (@RuytonShrew) appeared on BBC Radio Shropshire to talk more on it, while the broadcaster have also called for a comment from the club.

    🚨 BREAKING 🚨

Shrewsbury Town supporter groups have joined forces to write a public letter to Chairman Roland Wycherley expressing concerns about the ‘current state’ of the football club and questions over the ongoing takeover process

    THE LETTER READS:

    To:
Mr Roland Wycherley MBE, Chairman Shrewsbury Town Football Club Croud Meadow
    Oteley Road
    Shrewsbury SY2 6ST
    6 September 2026

    Dear Mr Chairman,

We, as representatives of a number of Shrewsbury Town supporter groups, are coming together to write to you today to express our concern with the current state of the Football Club, and to respectfully ask for more transparency from yourself and the Board of Directors on the future plans for the club.

In May 2023, you told us: “I want to assure you the senior management team is in place to guide us through any new challenges. Please do not be concerned about our club’s future, it is safe and secure.”

Since you wrote those words, the club has reduced year-on-year losses but has of course continued to increase aggregated losses. Against that backdrop, it has been relegated to League 2, and then survived a battle for relegation last season. The current campaign has again started poorly, raising the prospect of another struggle to retain EFL status. Our direction of travel appears to be remorselessly downwards.

Away from the field of play, we see a stadium that is clearly in need of work to bring it closer to the condition it was upon construction 19 years ago. The ironwork is rusting, paint is peeling, bird droppings infest the concourses and are plastered on all too many seats. The boardroom may be a shining beacon of corporate hospitality, but we assure you that the average supporter is not getting a great matchday experience right now. That is despite some notable efforts by the club’s leadership team, such as the eye-catching graphics in the corners of each stand.

You have been custodian of this club for 30 years now, and your accomplishments in that time are appreciated and will live forever in the club’s history: reversing our decline of the 1990s, delivering three promotions and four trips to Wembley, securing a new stadium. It is a record I am sure you look back upon with pride, and justly so.

Recent years, however, threaten to tarnish that record.“The era of a local businessman running clubs at this level is coming to an end,”you told us in April last year.“The reality is that football has moved on.”

So today, we ask for more clarity on exactly how Shrewsbury Town is moving on. We would ask for a clear and transparent response, by 20 September 2026, to a short set of fairly simple questions:

    1) We are told a takeover is progressing and has reached the Independent Football Regulator. Are you co-operating in full with this process, including signing and submitting all required paperwork?

    2) Are you happy that the buyer you are working with is the right person to take Shrewsbury Town Football Club forward?

    3) If so, can we be told who this buyer is? If not, can we be given a clear and reasonable answer as to why not? This could come as a statement from either yourself or the would-be buyer.

    4) What are the likely timescales to this process? It seems to have dragged on for some time, and more transparency on this point would ease anxiety among the supporter base at large.

    5) Should this takeover deal not be completed, do you have the necessary resources available to fund a competitive budget both for the remainder of this season and the next one too?

    6) What can we as supporters do to assist the club in a smooth and orderly transition to a new ownership group?

You once stated that relegation to non-League in 2003 was the worst feeling in your life and that you did not feel able to go out in public for three months afterwards. Please do not allow one of your last acts as Shrewsbury Town chairman be to suffer that pain all over again. This club has been your life, that much is plain to see, but it takes strength to recognise that the time has come to hand over the baton to a new generation. That time for Shrewsbury Town is surely now.

As a supporter coalition, we ask you to respond publicly to this letter – not with a behind-closed-doors meeting for an invited select few, but with a clear statement that all can watch or read which addresses all the issues we have raised and anything else you believe is relevant.

Our manager Gavin Cowan keeps telling us that the club needs to be united from supporters to Board. This is a laudable sentiment, but you really need to step up and play your part to make that a reality.

For many supporters, matters have reached the stage where the very future of the club seems to be at risk. You have previously said you felt sorry for supporters of the likes of Hereford, Chester and Wrexham, given what had happened to their clubs. Today, it very much feels that we are on a similar trajectory into football backwaters, If that sounds overly dramatic to you, then please help us by telling us why we should feel assured. Give us transparency. Give us honesty. Give us hope.

Your success is our success. We all want to see Shrewsbury Town prosper, but right now we have concerns that it is not strong and robust enough to meet the challenges it faces. We simply ask for you to address our points and tell us the plan to have it standing tall once more.

    Yours sincerely,
