It’s Chelsea’s first really big game of the season today, as the Blues take on Arsenal at the Emirates. It’s a huge team selection day for Xabi Alonso. Now we really get to find out who he likes.
Here’s our suspicions over who starts for the Basque.
Xabi Alonso’s first team coming together

In goal, new man Emi Martinez has had another week to settle and train. He will be under a lot of pressure at set peices.
In defence, the same Wesley Fofana, Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill trio should be in place.
At wing back there are more questions. Jorrel Hato and Malo Gusto started last week and are likely to repeat – but Pep Chavarria is certainly a possibility on the left, and Pedro Neto on the right. Marco Palestra is also surely close to a return. It’s very hard to call either side.
In midfield, Romeo Lavia and Reece James look to be first choice while Moises Caicedo is out. The question is how long we can keep them fit…
The front three is well established: barring injury, we’ll see Joao Pedro lead the line flanked by Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers in their usual deadly trident.
In other news…
Chelsea aren’t here to just get into the Champions League – they want to compete for the title, and they can start today.
Reece James will be in midfield today, and it’s going to be another huge test for the club captain as he adapts to that role full time.
