Becky Lynch has revealed a surprising detail about her WWE career. Lynch says she wasn’t originally planned to win her first SmackDown Women’s title.
In 2016, WWE introduced separate championships after the brand split. SmackDown received its own women’s championship at Backlash. Lynch eventually won the historic six-pack elimination match.
She defeated Natalya, Naomi, Nikki Bella, Carmella, and Alexa Bliss. Lynch became the first-ever SmackDown Women’s Champion that night. However, she believes WWE had somebody else planned for the historic moment.
Becky Lynch recalls WWE’s original plans for the first SmackDown Women’s Championship
Speaking on No-Contest Wrestling, Becky Lynch discussed winning the championship. She explained how the crowd changed WWE’s plans. Lynch said, “It was it was one of those things where it was just I was sick of taking a backseat and that was kind of real. That angst was real was like always almost getting the shot and then never being the one that was picked, never being the one that um they were going to hand the ball to and say, ‘Yeah, this is our this is our girl. Go run with it.’”
Lynch revealed that Nikki Bella was reportedly the original choice. “It was like even the first time that I won the SmackDown Women’s Championship, first ever, right? Yeah, that wasn’t the plan. It wasn’t the plan. No, but it was I think it was meant to go to Nikki Bella, actually who by the way, had like a badass had just come back from her broken neck, but the audience kind of liked me, you know, and they just once it was revealed, they just started chanting Becky,” Lynch added.
According to Lynch, WWE officials noticed the crowd reaction. She explained, “Yeah. And so kind of the office had to take notice of that and go, well, yeah. All right. I guess, kind of, we’ve got to go with her. But I don’t think the plan was ever going to be to give it to me again unless I took it. And so that was that opportunity of like, all right, I’m not sitting around. I’m going to make this as interesting as I possibly can.”
