Hearn made his stance plain: “If the question is the fight will take place in the UK, but it will be a 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning main event, or it has to go to New York, we’ll do it at 1:00 or 2 o’clock in the morning. And I believe I can get the mayor of London to come on board for that.”
The promoter treats this as pure brilliance. Joshua secures his national landmark, Britain gets the bragging rights, and Netflix lands its prime-time slot across the Atlantic.
Everyone walks away happy except the ticket holders stuck in the cold.
Wembley operates under a strict 11:00 p.m. noise curfew. Even if City Hall loves the concept, Sadiq Khan cannot single-handedly wipe that restriction away. Brent Council and local safety committees must sign off, while regional transport planners take on the nightmare of dispersing ninety thousand frozen fans into outer London after three in the morning.

Trapping that many spectators in an open bowl until morning invites serious trouble. Extended drinking sessions, plunging temperatures, endless delays, and general exhaustion create a recipe for chaos. Emergency personnel, private security, and Metropolitan Police officers get stuck holding the line while the crowd wanders the neighborhood at dawn.
Brent Council takes the public blame if things turn ugly. Granting an overnight waiver also punishes local homeowners, who must endure stadium noise followed by thousands of drunk fans flooding residential streets until sunrise.
The undercard fighters get shortchanged, too. Pushing the main event into the dead of night shoves solid preliminary bouts past midnight. Athletes must rebuild meal schedules, rest patterns, and warm-up drills around strange hours, while earlier contests play out inside a ghost town because paying patrons know the headliners will not appear until morning.
Joshua and Fury deal with real physical risks, too. Ring walks at two in the morning force both men to hit mitts well past midnight, upending biological rhythms built over grueling training camps. That creates an unnecessary hazard for aging heavyweights who depend on sharp reflexes and split-second instincts to protect themselves.
Boxing pulled this stunt fifty years ago. Muhammad Ali traded punches with George Foreman at four in the morning in Zaire so American closed-circuit screens had prime-time viewing. Streaming tech replaced satellite relays, yet local fans remain cheap decoration for international cameras.
Hearn kept right on pitching.
“Can you imagine Wembley, 100,000 people for AJ against Fury?” Hearn beamed.
Imagine those same supporters shivering in winter coats, staring at their phones, and wondering why this brilliant victory keeps them shivering on suburban platforms at three in the morning.
Taking the bout to Madison Square Garden would at least treat viewers honestly. Hearn’s proposal hands Britain the postal code, while Netflix takes the entire fight. He acts like he outsmarted the system, when all he did was roll over for a broadcast partner and pass the misery straight to the ticket buyers.
Calling it a compromise is generous. A real compromise requires both sides to give up something meaningful. Netflix gives up nothing. They get their prime-time American window, their subscribers, and an iconic British backdrop without having to adjust their clocks by a single minute. Hearn gives up nothing. He pockets the promoter fee, delivers the platform its schedule, and gets his glossy promotional photos of a packed stadium.
The only people sacrificing anything are the fans holding the tickets. They are the ones expected to swallow freezing temperatures, ruined transport, and an absurd schedule, all while Hearn smiles at the cameras and tells them he did them a massive favor.
It is pure salesmanship disguised as civic pride. He gets to wrap himself in the flag, claim he saved the bout for the home crowd, and ignore the reality for the supporters.
